Tempestt Henderson, a Girl Who Eats Soap, Suffers From Pica

This Girl Who Eats Soap Suffers From a Devastating Illness

You may have heard about 19-year-old Floridian Tempestt Henderson, the young woman known for eating soap. In the past few weeks, she's appeared on TLC's My Strange Addiction, and she's also been featured on the Daily Mail. To find out what's really going on, just keep reading.

Tempestt admits that she suffers from a not-uncommon disorder called pica. Pica, instead of freakish or funny, is actually pretty scary for the people who have it. Sufferers feel compelled to eat things that aren't food, and although Tempestt is "addicted" to soap, other people feel as though they have to eat paper, dirt, and even objects like spoons. It can be terrifying, and sufferers often end up hospitalized. Tempestt seems like a smart, kind young woman with a good sense of humor despite her illness. Thankfully, she's on her way to recovery and hasn't eaten soap since September of last year.

That episode and the one where the woman eats toilet paper were hard for me to watch all the way through.

Too bad so many people brush pica off like it's a matter of common sense... maybe because no one famous has admitted to having it? By the way... what hidden agenda would someone possibly have that would lead them to make up a disorder like this? Tonight they're having a guy who eats glass. My little girl saw the commercial and rewound it like ten times because she couldn't believe it.

Skincare, pica is a very real disorder. You should read up on it before being so judgemental. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002505

My cat has pica. Like, for real. She consumes pieces of plastic and rubber, we're constantly pulling things out of her throat. Pretty scary.

This is sad, but what does this have to do with Beauty? Isn't this more of a topic for TresSugar?
