Tinashe's Secret to Sleek, Sexy Hair? This Superaffordable Drugstore Line

As Tinashe's music career blossoms, so does her presence in the beauty world. Her naturally gorgeous features make it easy for her to pull off a slew of beauty looks like barely-there makeup or her bold sunset eye shadow from the Grammys. So it's no surprise her versatility has already landed her big-name collaborations. She partnered with MAC in 2016 on a limited-edition eye shadow palette. She was also recently tapped as the muse for the new Urban Outfitters x Juicy Couture revival (and made velour tracksuits look so cool again). Now the 24-year-old recording artist has joined John Frieda for its latest "Hair Talks, Make Your Statement" campaign.

The new partnership is all about empowering women to express themselves through their strands, a message that particularly resonates with Tinashe. When we caught up with the star over the phone bout her recent beauty gig, she explained that her relationship with her hair has always been complex, yet equally rewarding. For her, it's a vessel of self-expression.

"Loving your hair is an ongoing journey," she said. "Growing up I didn't necessarily have hair idols. I also didn't have anyone with my exact hair texture in my home so, because of that, I was always experimenting and trying new things. I had to really learn to love and style my hair on my own."

Reaching a point of confidence with her hair didn't come without trial and error. Like most of us, Tinashe has tried a plethora of products before finding the perfect match for her hair type. Now, she relies on the John Frieda Frizz-Ease range to keep her hair on point.

"I love to have smooth, silky hair at all times," she said. "It makes me feel confident. The Frizz-Ease serums are great for that despite your hair type."

Though her campaign is all about experimenting with style, there is one, in particular, she's hesitated to try: a supershort coif. The singer revealed that she's always played with the idea of a cropped cut. "I haven't built up the confidence to cut off all of my hair yet," she noted.

When it comes to staying confident, especially with the power of social media, Tinashe does have simple, yet important advice for her fellow millennials: "Put the phone down and stop reading opinions and comments" she urged. "The first mistake a lot of us make is taking social media too seriously. I know it's easier said than done, but it's the only way to stay above that negativity" — and we couldn't agree more.
