Trend Alert: Black Lips

Black lipstick: It's not just for goths anymore. This stark look showed up on the Yves Saint Laurent runway, and if cosmetics companies have their way, you'll be craving inky color for fall.

But can I level with you? Even though this is the hot trend, I just can't see this looking good in real life. I like Joy Division just as much as the next girl, but I fear this look would make me look like an overgrown Avril Lavigne groupie.

And yet, it's big for Fall, so I'd be a bad Bella for not keeping you in the trend-spotting loop. I report, you decide! If you're braver than I am and want some ways to try this trend,

.

To take a baby step on the dark side: Try Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss ($20) in Black Pearl. I know what you're thinking: Gothic lips from the queen of neutrals? Believe it. This moody mauve has tons of shine with dark pearl accents, but it's not as in-your-face as other options.

If you have to get the hyped-up shade: Everyone's all abuzz over Lancome's forthcoming lip color set, which is inspired by a pair of Louboutins. The $48 set includes a red lipstick and sparkling lip gloss in Piha Black. If this sounds like your dream come true, you can get on the waiting list by calling Bloomingdale's at (212) 705-2886.

For black on a budget: Manic Panic Raven Black Lipstick ($6.95) is a matte shade, and if you're OK with shopping at a place called Vampfangs.com, have at it. Layer clear lip gloss on top to channel your inner Elvira.

For the real thing: Just like on the runways, YSL Beauté Pur Black gloss ($28) is all shine and no sparkle. It's like latex for your lips, and it's definitely not for wallflowers — so again, hop on the waiting list if you want a couture-approved smile.

black lipstick is great. and not just because it was on a runway with some designer's name on it. although i do think it looks kind of cool all shiny ^^. manic panic is one of the leading cosmetic brands in the goth and punk industry and their black lipstick is one of the best available. by saying "if you're OK with shopping at a place called Vampfangs.com, have at it." you are really deducing the significance that this little "trend" began with stores, and brands like Vampfangs.com, Manic Panic, or even Hot Topic. i agree that the look is not for every one, but by making condescending comments about the original look that sparked the inspiration for this trend, you make yourself appear to be idealizing the fashion industry's twist on the goth classic when both should be esteemed with equal significance, not one having superiority over the other.

I read somewhere that Lancome has one out too. Also I figured that if you use the gloss thinly over a red lipstick you can darken it a little...

It looks got in commercials and on the runway, but I'd never wear it, I'm not pale enough.

I love it on the runway but I just can't ever see this in real life...

I'm skipping the black lips (yes, I'm not even trying it), I like dark berrie and brown lips for this winter, and I'll wear that, but this black is way too black for my daily life. And like psterling, my boyfriend wouldn't come close to me if I did wear it.

I have black lipstick for halloween, and I actually like the way itshows off the shape of my lips. It's too much for every day, though.

I have to admit when I first saw the YSL I thought I needed it. It's so black and shiny, like leather. It caught my attention and looks soooo good on the model. I know I can't get it though. It looks great on the runway and in fashion ads, but it just won't work for real life. I'm so pale anyway so I would look dead. Plus the fact that my personality is so not edgy or goth or punk, so people would literally laugh in my face if I tried this.

Not on my lips, not gonna happen. I think it very unattractive.

I concur with other posters: black lipstick is great on the runway and maybe on Halloween but not for everyday (or even every night) use.

lol, just got a mental image if my hubby with black lipstick smeared on his lips! He hates kissing me when I'm just wearing lip gloss!

Very artsy. I could see it in a magazine or on the runway but like a lot of runway fashion, you can never *actually* pull it off in real life. Pass!

It looks wonderful on the models though.

Def couldn't see this working in real life. Even worse if it smudged!

being a ex-goth girl (the first time around, in 1980-85), I didn't like black lipstick then and i like it less now all shiny and plastic looking. Great for runway but not for reality. The Lancome duo of red with black gloss is interesting and I'd like to see that in person, but I wouldn't wear it myself. I'll stick to my vampy Russian Red or Ruby Woo, thank's very much :)

They can push it all they want, it's not a look that translates well off the runway to real life. It's definitely not a colour that I would wear unless it was Halloween.

I'm sorry this is not cute in real life.....Runway, the cover of a magazine...yes, but going to a party and seeing someone with black lips is a mess!
