What Beauty Advice Has Your Mother Given You?

My mom is one of those ladies that everyone loves. She has a knack for letting things roll off her shoulders, and she never seems to have a bad day. Plus, when I was growing up she used to let me eat Cookie Crisp for breakfast. How cool is that?

But, beneath the sunshiny interior and weakness for a kid that just wanted her sugar fix, there's a wildly hilarious woman with a quick, sly wit. In honor of Mother's Day, I asked my mom to share with me her beauty advice. Tell me what advice your mom gave you, and find out what my bella mama had to say when you

.

  • Moisturize: While my mom does it up old-school with a nightly application of Vaseline to remove makeup around her eyes and soften fine lines, I love her reasoning behind why she puts it on her lips, too. "It makes my lips kissable," she quipped. TMI on the love life, ma.
  • Treat yourself: "I'm all about big shiny hair. Instead of doing my color at home myself (it was always way too brassy), now I splurge and get it done at the salon," she said.
  • Drink your water: Mom knows best.
  • Smile: "Maybe the best beauty tip is to smile. It seems to draw people to me, and they smile back."

My mom always told (and still tells me) to wear sunblock everyday and everywhere. Too many women in their 20s are being diagnosed with skin cancer and I will not be one of them because of my mom.

Take your make-up off every night before you go to bed. To always wear sunscreen, especially on my face (I have very fair skin and freckles). I also use Vaseline to take my eye make-up off which my mom and grandmother do.

"Your lip color should be a dirt road, not a 3-lane highway." Also, don't worry about the family oily skin. Grandma is 80 and still gets breakouts but doesn't have a single wrinkle.

Wear sunscreen and wash with cleanser not soap. She also told me that expensive night creams are just as good or better then the drug store stuff. And from what I can tell she's right! The olay regenerist has made her look more alive then Dr Lewinns, Ella Bache or Skin Doctor ever has!

"Stop picking at your face!" I do it as a subconscious thing and my mom has ALWAYS sternly reminded me when she catches me doing it.

To smile; and that while I may notice every flaw, others rarely do, so not to obsess over them. (still trying to accept/learn the latter advice. :P )

Sunscreen. Her and her friends used to lay outside and put on baby oil. Now that she is much older she regrets it for many many reasons.

Well, my mother didn't teach me much. But my grandmother taught me to age gracefully. She walked and swam regularly, even when she was in her 80s and always said that getting older just meant that you were getting beautiful in a different way. I like that sentiment. I just found my first silver hair and I was kind of excited to think about how pretty my hair would look all silvery. I think this is a way better attitude than the new fad of constant procedures to turn back the clock.

My mom never taught me anything about cosmetics, but later on I taught her!She educated me about the importance of drinking enough water, wearing natural materials, taking my vitamin supplement and having a good posture.

Allytta, my mom's (and grandma's) advice was pretty much the same, that the cheap stuff is usually just as good! I still use Pond's moisturizer and vaseline to take of my makeup, as my Mom does and my Grandma did, and their skin is/was gorgeous! I also don't really wash my face, I tend to break out when I do...just the vaseline to take the eyemakeup off and wash off the rest in the shower with water. Sometimes less is more!

Didn't grow up with mom, but my aunts and sisters never give me beauty advice. Secretly, they want me to look like a hag, but I'm on to them. mwhahaha

The absolute best beauty advice my mother gave me is to have integrity of character and be a woman of my word. As she and my grandmother used to say: it doesn't matter how gorgeous you are on the outside, if you're ugly inside, you'll be ugly outside too.

that expensive skincare isn't better than cheap. and she had to learn that the hard way. serums and anti-aging products are for people 35+ - a lot of young girls have obsession with using anti-aging cosmetics when they turn 18, what's up with that? washing your face everyday is drying and unnecessary. i now wash it only when i wash my hair. (taking the make up off is not washing your face in my book)

She has flawless skin & uses something called Metrin. It's way too many steps for me, so I use something else. But, she always encouraged good skin care. We used to make homemade facials, manicures, and spa treatments when I was a little girl. She always keeps lotion on her hands & her nails looking nice..even if it's clear nail polish. :flower:

Let's see. My mom never gave me real beauty advice other than just to drink water. However, my mom has a makeup / product obsession like I do -- we just never talked about it. She did however teach me to put on eyeliner. I used to make her do my top lids, haha.

To not only moisturize and use sunscreen on the face, but also on the neck because that gives away your age later on.

Wear sunscreen! After years of my Mom being careless as teenager/young adult, she learned that sunscreen is essential, and she's passed that wisdom on to me. Because of her I always get compliments that skin us UBER soft and pretty, yay!
