Women Are Braiding Their Hair Like Unicorn Horns and It Is Truly Magical

What Do You Dislike About Beauty Advertisements?

What's Your Beauty Ad Pet Peeve?

On the latest episode of Mad Men, there was a lot of talk about marketing beauty, and of course the guys at the agency had some very retro ideas of what women want. (Hint: we're all marriage-crazed hysterics.) While we're glad the days of that kind of overt advertising are mostly over, there are still things about the way beauty products are sold that can rub you the wrong way. I, for example, find ads that use tons of lens flare and unnecessary sunlight laughable — their tagline should be "Buy this shampoo . . . and control the weather." Do you have a beauty ad pet peeve? And what do you think bothers you so much about it?

My annoyance is mostly reserved for print magazine ads. The fake lash mascara ones ARE pretty bad, but actually what I hate the most is when I'm looking at an for one product, but REALLY WANT to know what the other make-up products are and the EXACT color/shade. I think it's the dumbest thing in the world that they wouldn't tell you all of the make-up used so that if you want to check out the lipstick instead of the eye shadow, you can.... Right???

Magazine ads where the models have no pores. Not a single one.

Anon 10, I forgot to mention that! Mascara ads drive me up the wall!

Hair product ads where the models have HUGENORMOUS hair. Seriously, the "extra volume" shampoo wasn't the only thing that went into that model's hair. I'm sure it took hours, and about a pound of mousse and cream.

I hate Proactiv ads. The "breakouts" that celebrities "struggle with" are a joke compared to what people with real breakouts have to endure. And isn't the main ingredient just benzoyl peroxide? Why pay $20 for benzoyl peroxide? I also hate anti-aging ads because there is absolutely no such thing as a cream that "lifts", "firms", or "erases wrinkles". I hate overly retouched photos. It's so obvious. I hate false advertising (refer to anti-aging rant).

@Rjs baby girl Just like the Herbashine commercial I saw last night, the girl seemed amazed at having "Not a grey in sight!" despite the fact that she's probably still in high school :P

I hate when I see ads or commercials advertizing anti-aging products and the model is like 19 years old.

Commercials for facial cleansers where the model has a full face of make-up after washing her face. Any sort of airbrushing or photoshop in magazine ads for any kind of make-up seems like false advertising. Throwing out words like probiomicrodermamineralvitamin-e.

I hate almost every printed beauty ad because of Photoshop. The way they make the models' skin look... it's just unnatural! I don't find it remotely appealing. I can accept a normal amount of retouching like all ads have, but beauty related ones take the cake!

I hate proactiv spokescelebs who have lived years of their lives in the public eye and never had a pimple.

Ditto the above comments. I hate "eco" stuff that has mineral oil, etc., in it and I hate lash commercials where the models clearly have on falsies. I also hate commercials that assume women want to catch a man or that a women is only beautiful if she is rail thin and younger than 25. I also hate comments on blogs (even this one) that do the same (ie "Men find young women more attractive, it is just a fact.")

I hate ads that insult my intelligence. Or ads that feature words like "organic", "eco", "natural" are full of lots of crap.

Hair product commercials that say things like "split ends...gone!". *sigh* Your split ends aren't going to be "gone" unless you get a trim!...haha. Also, mascara commercials. I feel like a new mascara comes out every few months that is advertised to give you "bigger, bolder, fuller, longer" lashes (or some combination of those words).
