Why Do (or Don't) You Color Your Hair?

Why Do (or Don't) You Color Your Hair?

There are many reasons women get their hair colored, from wanting to express their individuality with teal streaks, to the common desire to blend away gray. And for all the reasons people have for heading to the salon or hair color aisle, there are plenty other reasons why others prefer to remain virgins (that's hair color virgins, you know). Cost and maintenance immediately come to mind, but what say you on the matter? Why do (or don't) you have your hair colored?

I color my hair because I think my natural hair color is an ugly color. It's dirty blonde. If it were lighter or a more appealing color id probably leave it alone. But since its a nasty dirty blonde I get light blonde highlights. Ive never dyed my hair, and I guess thats a good thing. I also wait 6 months between highlights to let my hair repair itself.

I'm naturally a medium-dark auburn brown, but I've been dying my hair various shades of red and auburn since middle school. I like experimenting with my haircolor and feel that red hair suits me more than plain ole brown. I've been tempted to switch to using henna because it's healthier on my hair, but it's hard for me to get the right color combo with it. I actually don't mind the little bit of damage I get from dying my hair...I have very straight, very fine hair and dying it every couple of months roughs it up just enough to give it some texture and allows it to hold curls or waves better. I rarely use heat tools, so overeall my hair is pretty strong and healthy despite the dyeing.

I colored (bleached) my hair blonde, because I just love blonde hair (ever since I was a child). I had blonde hair when I first joined the Army and stayed that way until 2002, when I decided to go back to my natural medium brunette. I loved the brunette too, but after 8 years, I was ready for a change. I had a change in my lifestyle and wanted to go back blonde too. I love it. I'm staying blonde for now on. Now I only do my roots and I only do them 1 time every 3 months (90-100 days). I use the Revlon Frost & Glow (does a better job than regular bleaching kits that I have used in the past). The best!

kna if light roots is the problem, you can buy root-pencils (like eyebrow pencils, kind of) at beauty shops and color them in. My former boss once said something about needing to dye her hair- she was an older woman and dyed her hair jet black- and I told her it looked fine. She lifted her hair in the back and she had an inch grown out snow-white! She used the root-pencil and it looked amazing. If light roots are the only thing holding you back, I would highly recommend you try it.

I'm a natural blond who has always wished for dark brown hair. The roots that go with that just look kind of crazy though since most people go the other way, and my hair grows fast enough that the upkeep would be ridiculous. So I stick with the blond. If only I had money like Mandy Moore....

I've dyed since I was 14, b/c my color is naturally dirty dishwater brownish-blonde... hell it looks grey to me. When I was in high school I did blue, purple, orange, fire engine red, etc, from age 17 on I've done a more natural red, black and brown... I'm currently bleach blonde and love love love it. So I guess my ugly natural color is a blessing in disguise... I feel like it gives me license to play around with whatever color I want. Also a couple others on here said they get bored with the same color over and over again, I'm right there with you.

I usually highlight my hair in the summer with Sun In, it just speeds up the process that already happens on its own (I work in a greenhouse, so my head is always getting sun). I usually regret it around November though, because I don't love it as it grows out. I might just let it go and get a short cut and use a hair sunscreen next summer.

I love this post, find it so interesting!! I started highlighting my hair very young (in middle school)--I had hair stylists aunts. Well, the bleach dried out my already thick, course hair and I grew up in a time before flat irons. This equalled a pouffy mess. Not cute years for me. I highlighted my hair for the last time as a college sophomore, then used semi perm color that year, but made it darker then my natural medium brown. Since then I haven't touched the color! And I haven't looked back, (7ish years) between no harsh chemicals in my hair and flat irons it's a new world for me. And I love the natural highlights in my hair. Unfortunately, I have grays popping up, so this non-color look is probably only a few more years for me!! I will dread the day this low maintenance style is over (I also have long hair, so I don't have to cut it often either!)

I get bored with my hair, and I like to change it up. I only use semi permanent, and I wait until it's all out of my hair before doing it again. Otherwise you get a muddy, dull look from too much build up. I bleached my hair for years because it turned from a golden blonde to a dirty dishwater when I was around 14. I colored it a brunette color 3 years ago, and I think it's more flattering than the blonde. I have dark green eyes and I'm very fair, (I actually have a tan in my picture here!) and the darker color brings it out more.

I don't color anymore simply because I've spent the last year really taking care of my hair and I don't want to ruin it. My hair has a tendency to act pretty wonky once it's colored, so I'm just letting it do it's thing.

I don't color my hair because I once went in with four inches of my natural color and I told my stylist I was thinking of coloring it again. She gasped and said to never color it; she said she had lots of clients coming in looking or my color brown and my color doesn't come boxed. Let's just say that comb didn't feel good and I took her advice. 3 years later, I still get asked who my colorist is and I have to answer Nature!
