Why You Don't Necessarily Need to Feel Bad About Your Neck

Why You Don't Necessarily Need to Feel Bad About Your Neck

Remember Nora Ephron, the screenwriter of When Harry Met Sally...? Lately, it seems like all she wants to talk about is how she feels bad about her aging neck. "The neck is a dead giveaway," she writes. "Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn't have to do that if it had a neck."

Maybe so, but your neck doesn't have to be any less gorgeous and healthy than your face. The key to avoiding "turkey neck" in your golden years is to stop it before it starts, and fortunately, doing so is easy. Wear sunscreen every day (even on cloudy days and in winter). When you apply your moisturizer each morning, cover your entire face, then apply lotion on your neck and decolletage, too. With vigilant use, the book you write in your 60s will be I Feel Great About My Neck. As for writing hit romantic comedies, well, you're on your own with that.

If you use products on your neck I'm sure you can keep the aging to a minimum. Use your hair to cover your neck if you're so self conscious of it. I don't think aging is anything to be ashamed of and it's sad that it has become such a hard thing for women to deal with.

Yup, I use my face moisturizer on my neck (and décolletage) as well. The whole thing about the neck giving one's age away reminds me of Strangers With Candy (the Comedy Central show/movie in which Amy Sedaris played a 46 year old ex junkie/whore who goes back to high school). They made Amy up with bags under her eyes, etc but they always had to put her in turtlenecks to cover her youthful neck (and long sleeves to hide the lack of track marks...). :)

Vienvien — I think the claim that you need a different cream for your neck is bogus, honestly. While there are special neck creams, I think that you can use your face cream on your neck. I'm not a dermatologist, of course, but that's just my opinion. The fewer steps the better, I say. (Of course, I have about 10 steps each night, but I'm insane like that.)

my grandma's neck was smoother than her face and at the age of 84, she attributes it to some miracle lotion she uses...

It is so true that you can always tell a woman's age by looking at her neck - it is scary but it is always a tell-tale sign! I am young but I am sure to moisturize and protect mine.

Some dermatologists say that you ccan slather your face moisturizer on your neck, while others say it should be a different moisturizer designed for the neck...so what 's the deal here? is there a different ingredient other than the one used in the face moisturizer to be used for the neck? This is funny.

Another age revealer are your hands. Therefore, hand moisturizer should be a good friend of yours!!

I refuse to get surgrey when I age. That's why I'm preventing it now rather than correcting it later. I'm still very young so I always wear sunscreen and I moisturize my neck to my chest. I also moisturize my eye-area. I'm going to fight aging a natural way.

Yup, wear sunscreen and learn to like yourself even with your perceived imperfections.
