Miley Cyrus's Tattoos Are a Collection of Meaningful Moments

Miley Cyrus has a massive tattoo collection that seems to grow as the days go by. The singer got her first piece of ink in 2009 at the age of 17, and she hasn't stopped since. Now, after her two Grammy wins at the 2024 award show — in which she performed her hit song "Flowers" and displayed many of her patchwork designs — fans both old and new are curious about her collection.

A quick search into her body art will reveal that, unlike many other celebrities who have their go-to tattooists, Cyrus's tattoos are the work of various artists — but several have some very special meanings behind them. Cyrus got her most recent design back in March of 2020, hinting to fans in an Instagram post that it was inspired by "Dance Me to the End of Love," a book that visualizes Leonard Cohen's song of the same name with illustrations by Matisse. The video shows the silhouette of a body that is etched onto her upper right arm, and it looks like one of Matisse's signature works inspired by his affinity for cutouts. Before that, Cyrus got a handwritten note that she received from Yoko Ono traced onto her shoulder (it read: "I'm proud of you, Yoko") and a cursive-script piece over her knuckles that read "Freedom," both in December 2019.

There's plenty more where that came from, too. Read ahead for a brief guide to some of Cyrus's most meaningful tattoos.

In 2019, Cyrus got a tattoo of the word "Freedom" in cursive on her right hand. Some of Cyrus's fans have speculated that the tattoo was in response to the end of her marriage to Liam Hemsworth, however she also has the lyric "Don't f*ck with my freedom" throughout her song "Mother's Daughter."

Back in 2012, Cyrus and her then-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, got coordinating tattoos on their left arms of quotes from Theodore Roosevelt.

The singer had hers done in July of that year and chose an excerpt from the former president's legendary "Citizenship in a Republic" speech: "So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."

A few months later, Hemsworth picked a line from the same speech that reads, "If he fails, at least fails while daring greatly," which many assume is missing a "he." Oops.

Cyrus's first tattoo ever was the phrase "just breathe" on her rib cage in December 2009, which was reportedly done as a tribute to her close friend Vanessa, who died of cystic fibrosis, and both of her grandfathers, who died of lung cancer.

The "just breathe" tattoo is joined by a moving image dedicated to her late dog, Floyd, who passed away in April 2014, and a naked woman standing in a body of water.
