All of this is great advice! It really is sad that you need to state that overuse of exclamation points and smiley faces are unprofessional. There are still people who insist on using them though. Also, the point you made about checking the recipient list is one I think most people overlook. Especially when writing a sensitive email or exposing new information, check twice before you send! I wrote a blog similar about online business etiquette. If you’re interested, you should check it out: http://pwsatusf.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/jennifer-scheck-2/

I am wondering what others use for small talk in professional emails? Do you have standard phrases that you fall back on regularly?

Can a woman be taken seriously in an office environment if she has blue, french tips? As much as I would love to wear fun colors of fingernail polish in the workplace, I just don't think it would be appropriate. :(

I agree on the caps lock. It's very rude and unprofessional.

I can't believe anyone over 12 needs to be told that you don't use more than one exclamation point at a time in work emails. In fact, they piss me off just as much in personal emails. Just don't use them, unless you're joking!!!!!111 one

Along the punctuation/emoticons tip, please use all caps sparingly. I thought it was basically understood that this is "shouting" in the written word, but apparently not all my co-workers get that...
