I'm Asking: How Much Plastic Do You Carry?

I'm Asking: How Much Plastic Do You Carry?

In 2010, many of us have resolved to pay down debt and keep up our good spending habits. We're focused on keeping good credit and paying down remaining card balances. Many people have already been using debit more as credit rules are changing. But despite the drawbacks of credit cards, they do offer some benefits, as long as you don't get too carried away.

Still, there's no gold standard when it comes to card rules. If we've learned anything in the past year, it's to live within our means or even below our means — but that varies from person to person. As long as you understand your spending style, know how much you're able to pay off, and remember to keep your debt-to-credit ratio below 30 percent, you should be a good judge of how many cards you can handle. So tell me, what's your magic number? How many credit cards are stashed in your wallet?

I've got three credit cards, one store card, one check card, and one debit card. I like using credit so I can accumulate rewards points but I do recognize that this encourages me to spend more at times. I do pay off my bills in full each month though.

In my wallet, I have two -- our joint credit card that get's used 95% of the time, and one that's my own. My husband is the same -- our joint credit card, and one that is his own. Total we have three. Individually, we carry two. Yes, we pay off our balances every month. Our joint credit card gives a rebate credit that we receive every month, so we earn money by using it.

One credit card and one debit card. And a library card. That's about the extent of my plastic. Oh, and right now I have a few Christmas gift cards kicking around in there too.

I only carry one. I used to carry six but it tempted me to spend, spend, spend. Now that they raised my interest rates, I let them closed those credit cards, after I paid the balance of course.

I have 3. One is kept at home and never used, I use the AMEX regularly since it gives me cash back, and I pay off the balance every month. And the visa I use in case no one takes AMEX.

3 - 2 credit cards - 1 for gas and things like the utilities which are billed automatically to it and 1 for big ticket items (both are rewards cards) and and an ATM card for my grocery money.

I have 3 cards total, 1 debit and 2 credit. I only use my debit to access the ATM, and charges are split on my two credit cards for essentials (gas, groceries) and non-essentials (clothes, electronics, high-ticket items). I pay off my cards in full every month, but I would like to get rid of one credit card and replace it with a joint card I'd share with my boyfriend.

I have 4 credit cards but carry around only one. I've had these cards at a zero balance for a long time and just never got around to cancelling them. Now I'm afraid that if I do cancel a couple it will ding my credit score.

I've only ever had one credit card. Once the loan on our new house is finalized, husband and I will merge our cards and have two in both our names.

none! We went credit card free this year. We will be getting a low balance card for emergencies now that both of us have fixed up our credit, but for the most part we will continue using debit and cash.

I have three credit cards, one of which is a joint one with my husband that we use the most often. We are well in control of them, not charging too much and always paying off every month. Since we've been able to keep them under control, it's actually very useful to use them to charge a lot of everyday expenses (groceries, phone bill, etc), so that we can really add up rewards points.
