I'm Asking: Would You Rather Job Search or Be Relocated?

Consider this lesser-of-two-evils scenario: Your boss offers you the opportunity to relocate to a new city where you know nobody, or else you lose your job. Both of the options have their possible positives (maybe you want a new job anyway and just need the push, or you've been craving a move) but there are obvious negatives, too. Job searching and relocation are both surrounded by clouds of uncertainty — if you had to choose, which would you take?

Well, if I were forcibly relocated, I would very likely wind up not too far from San Francisco, California. I'd have to think hard about that because it's so much more expensive to live there even with a cost of living raise. But there are times when I'd like a change of scenery. The other offices are in Ireland and Australia. I'd move in a heartbeat!

i think that it would really depend on where i would move to. i'm always open to new cities and i could consider it to be an adventure -but if it's some boring place that i would HATE then i don't think that i would go that route and i would job search instead. it also depends on what the job market is like at the time. if i;m going to be unemployed for a LONG time then i don't know if i could do that since i have a lot of expenses that i'd have to take care of.

we're loving it so far! :P

Definitely relocate. Husband and I are both job-searching right now, and would relocate in a hot minute if one of us got a good offer.

We job searched AND relocated :-) Hubby was looking for a career change and we were hoping to move. It's been the best decision we've ever made!

Ohhh  How do you like that area? I love DC!

That's a difficult choice! I love Seattle, and my whole life is here, but if I couldn't the equivalent of my job in the city, I'd almost have to move. I'd feel horrible, though, because I'd have to move my fiance away from his daughter, and my brother also lives here.

Well I do believe I would do both. If -I- happened to find something better but some stroke of luck, I would totally take it and say 'screw you' to my boss. But otherwise...I dunno.

Job search. Hubby and I built our house 3 years ago and have no plans on moving ... besides, he makes more money than I do!

At this point in my life (live in city I love, planning a wedding, my awesome little brother just moved into town), I'd have to say job search. Then again, I just went through the new job and major move last May! But I have moved around a lot and I thrive on change. A year from now, if this happened to my future hubby or myself, I would probably have a different answer.

I'd relocate unless the place I'd go to is really awful. And it'd have to be pretty bad for me to not want to relocate there, since I've enjoyed working in both big cities and middle-of-nowhere small towns. I see moving somewhere where I know nobody to be a plus rather than an "evil", actually. Done it plenty of times, and I either make wonderful new friends or have a blast doing whatever I want and exploring new places on my own. I wouldn't want to move somewhere where all my relatives live. I'd be obligated to see them all the time, that'd be a huge pain in the ass and really cramp my preferred lifestyle of having a life of my own.

Relocate ... I can only go to London from here.

I would love to move. Job searching is so hard and exhausting. Although moving is not much fun either, but I still would move.

It depends on the location, but I think in general I'd rather have the move. Sometimes going to a different location is enough like changing jobs (different environment and people) anyway. Sy--that's awesome! Where are you guys moving to?

Job search. If I was single, relocation would be great, but i want to choose where and when i move.

I kinda think I'd chose relocation if I liked my job. I'm always open to trying out new locales, but if you're not forced to, you rarely do.

Ha. My hubby was just presented this exact situation. We chose to move and I'm really happy we picked that! :)

It really depends on where. I am all for relocating only if it's to a desired place.

we would move, or commute. being in the UK, and with virtually NO jobs in my area, we wouldnt really have much of a choice.
