Taking Criticism at Work

How Well Can You Take Criticism?

When I asked you if you constantly crave office praise most of you said that you only expect to be acknowledged if you do something truly exceptional, but about 30 percent of you said you crave praise to the point that you feel insecure without it. Measuring how much praise we feel is necessary to make us happy at work got me thinking about the opposite. If Gen Y is supposedly so sensitive to receiving office praise than logic would say that we wouldn't take criticism so well since it would injure our "over-stroked egos." Can you take the heat?

You forgot the option for "I am never criticized, I'm perfect!" Actually, I'm okay with constructive criticism, but frequently it makes me feel bad that I didn't do a better job. Fortunately I rarely get it--maybe people are afraid to say anything.

I really don't care much if ppl criticise me, be it constructive or not. I look at it all as opinions and make my own judgements about them. All that is important to me is that they are not rude. If they are rude ... well that is another story.

I can handle constructive criticism but if its more than that I become defensive.

As long as it is constructive and not meant to be hurtful I am totally fine with it. No one is perfect and we all have areas we can improve on. If I got a a perfect review I would know my boss wasn't paying attention.

I'm a total baby when it comes to criticism. I'm too much of a perfectionist to let negative comments slide by.

ha! I just had this conversation with my husband. I can take criticism from anyone EXCEPT the people closest to me, then I feel attacked and get really defensive.

It definitely depends on how it's given...and who is giving it. But I definitely appreciate constructive criticism from people that I respect.

After 6 years of art school - I take criticism extremely well. I ask for honest critiques and consecutive criticism from employers and co-workers and they are shocked that I am not emotional about it and actually listen to their suggestions.

i'm a lot better with it than i used to be. i don't think i'll ever LIKE criticism, but when it's presented constructively i've learned to take it as feedback to learn and grow from. i guess it depends on who it's coming from, too -- if it's from a mentor type, great; if it's from that jerk in the office who offers her opinion at every given opportunity, i'll still want to punch her, probably.

It depends on how the criticism is given. I take office criticism from my boss/coworkers/certain friends really well because I know they're just trying to help, but it gets a little sticky with my parents and some friends.
