Words Not to Use on LinkedIn Profiles

Get Rid of These 10 Overused Words on Your Online Resume

A big mistake people make when they are writing their resumes is to use hackneyed phrases and words. Writing repetitive phrases that a hiring manager has seen on countless resumes will not make you stand out. Instead, it'll lower your chances of catching their attention. Here are 10 words Krista Canfield, a spokesperson for LinkedIn, told the Wall Street Journal that people tend to overuse on their online profiles:

  • Innovative
  • Dynamic
  • Motivated
  • Extensive experience
  • Results-oriented
  • Proven track record
  • Team player
  • Fast-paced
  • Problem solver
  • Entrepreneurial

Canfield suggests to replace those tired words with more specific details of your achievements, which will make you a more appealing candidate to employers. She says, "The problem with using generic words and phrases in your profile and résumé is that hundreds, if not thousands, of other professionals are describing themselves the exact same way."
