Is American Idol Too Mean?

The other day we saw Paula completely out of her mind, and last night the show made fun of many contestants. Simon even said to one guy, "You look like one of those creatures that live in the woods with those massive eyes." What do you think? Is American Idol too mean this year?

WAY TOO mean, you can't help the physcical features your born with. calling that one dude BIG EYED CREATURE was just too harsh. i mean, some of the contestants do make themselfs look stupid on purpose so they'll feel like their famous. but just to comment on physcical features on what a person looks like. that's just rude and stupid. critics on performances are acceptible though.

Yea I agree with more bad singers shown than good. I love seeing the good singers and getting all tingly and wowed. I love it! Especially auditions because you get to know them and find your favourites that way.

It seems to have gotten to the point that its not so much about finding great talent, as it is to hear horrible singing and see people get made fun of by 3 rich people. I think it has gone to far. It seemed to me that there was more bad singers shown than good. I just really dont' see how there could be that many bad singers without a buttload of good ones.

i thought some of the comments were over the top. i watched about 10 minutes and couldn't finish. people can't help what faces they were born with, there are much more diplomatic ways to say "you don't have the look we are going for". but they do go on the show, knowing that rejection is a strong possibility and that their looks are going to be strongly critizied. i don't know, i'm a big softie and don't see the point in being a jerk i guess. people are going to be mean no matter what, i just don't want to support it. no more AI for me. ::the platypus is proof that god has a sense of humor::

If AI is so picky about looks, how did Clay Aitken make it so far :?

I don't know, some of the contestants get all cocky, and then I think they are allowed to be mean, but some of the contestants are just so sweet and nice that i feel so bad when simon is mean to them!!!! my fave part of the show, i have to say, is watching paula freak out and drool everytime there is a cute african american guy on. She completely loses her cool!!! come on paula, discretion!!!!!! there is no need to jump out of your seat everytime a cute guy auditions!

This show is supposed to be based on talent, not looks. But like anything in this world, that kind of goes out the window since standards are so outrageous. I saw the clip of it on the View today and I thought it was terrible. Unacceptable.

with Simon..its ok, actually, its quite funny, it makes the show and its expected. BUT now Randy and Paula are getting a little meaner when they were the ones that balanced things out, i think it is getting just a bit too harsh.

Simon shouldnt just blurt those mean things out of his mouth even though that may be what everyone is thinking. It is just waay too mean.

People, please. I don't even watch AI and I know that if you are on the show, or attempt to be on the show, you are going to be called out and ridiculed by Simon and the gang. The show has been on for what, 6 years now? It's not a new thing. And looking at the pictures of the contestants on this thread...Seriously?? The one guy DOES look like a bush baby. If you have no talent, you sure as hell better look good if you want to make it in the entertainment industry.

I'm not gonna lie I laughed I thought it was funny but there was one guy who I felt kinda bad for cuz they were obviously making him out like a fool....and I seriously dont think he knew any better....but again whats makes the show is the ridiculous auditions and the judges comments and reactions.

I think they are going too far this season. Simon has always been crass. I think though that he is the most honest when judging the singing. Paula and Randy have seemed like they were a little easier on the contestants and it always made Simon look like the bad guy. Last night it was hard to watch because Randy and Paula were acting so over the top and dramatic...I didn't care for that at all.

It's a show! Entertainment! Everyone should know what they're getting into, it's not like you're going to be hit blind-sided by any of Simon's stinging comments.

I can't decide if it's too mean. I feel bad for these people but someone along the way should have said - you should not go on American Idol. I mean don't these people have family and friends?!? Also, by now, these people must have seen the show and they shouldn't take it personally, it's just the way the show is. If they do go on and get humiliated, they should have expected it. Even if I was good, I would just always expect to go in there and get slammed by everyone.

i think that sometimes it's just funny but like last night when simon said that that guy looked like a creature from the jungle, that was just uncalled for. he can't help the way he looks and it's not like he was being rude in the first place so simon had no place to say something like that. i was appalled...

last night was super funny and at time really mean, however, when he told that kid he looks like a bush baby, he kinda does...http://www.cercopan.org/images/gallery%20bush%20baby.jpg (check it out and tell me what you think). These people are making the choice to be on AI, if they really think they are that fabulous, maybe that criticism will prevent us from having to ever hear them again and shed some light on their lack of singing ability. Not everyone can sing...God knows I can't!

they were so mean last night...some people can't help what they look like!!! It's not like Simon, randy or Paula are perfect, they are just shallow and don't care about anything but money. It's disgusting...no matter people have self image issues!

I can't watch it.... I find that is fine to make fun of losers that you can totally see they just want their 15 mins. but is another thing to completely trash deluded people who think or have been told they're good. I'm surprised AI hasn't been hit with suicides or suicide lawsuits. and this season...PAULA needs to put down the pills or the booze or come out and reveal she has some sort of sickness...she's acting SUPER WEIRD!

There was a kid from my hometown last night on AI, David. OMG he was horrible!!! We come from a town of only 10000, so he's probably really embarressed. But I felt so bad for him that Simon literally broke down his self esteem. And the busy baby kid? That's cruel to make fun of physical appearances. You're auditioning with your voice, not your looks. Some of his digs were a little low. I admit I laugh my butt off when he's mean, but really its just a matter of time before some poor person blows his head off because of it...

That was funny when the big eyed guy said "I don't look like a monkey!" And then I felt bad for him.

I've never watched this show and I'm a reality TV junkie. Just not big into the singing stuff.
