John Kerry Isn't Feeling Ben Affleck's Bro Nudge

Ben Affleck traveled to Washington DC on Wednesday to speak at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on behalf of his charity, Eastern Congo Initiative. The actor was at the hearing to testify about the Democratic Republic of Congo, a cause that is close to his heart. "Outside my family and my work, this is it, this is my legacy," Ben said during the hearing. "This is the thing I will be identified with. I take it extremely seriously." Ben said that he was cautiously optimistic about the current state of affairs in the Congo, and joked that the Republicans (including Sen. John McCain, whose wife Cindy sat with Ben during the hearing) were doing more to help Africa than "his party," the Democrats. Ben also noted that the public can be skeptical of an actor's involvement in a political issue but the key is to "demonstrate that you know what you're talking about, that you're not a dilettante." He joked about people expecting him to be wearing a cape, a nod to his much-talked-about role as Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel.

While Ben made headlines with his testimony, an awkward moment he shared with Secretary of State John Kerry also picked up steam in the news. Ben went in to give John a warm grab on his arm, but John deflected him and turned to shake his hand, all while the cameras were clicking. John, who used to be a senator for Ben's hometown state of Massachusetts, has been linked to Ben in the past, when the actor was rumored to be considering a run for the Senate to fill John's vacant seat when he left to become Secretary of State in 2012.
