Brad and Angelina Giving Away Millions

Angelina and Brad are giving some of their very good fortune back and in a very big way. The two are each donating $1 million to two humanitarian organizations. Brad may be signing up to be the highest paid actor in Hollywood history, and Angelina doesn't do too bad for herself either, so good for them for sharing! Here's more:

The recipients are Global Action for Children and Medecins sans Frontieres/ Doctors Without Borders. "In the most troubled parts of the world — places that much of the world has abandoned — MSF is always there," said Jolie in a statement issued by Trevor Neilson, the couple's philanthropic and political adviser. "I have seen these brave men and women working in war zones and horrific conditions and I deeply admire them."

"Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying," she said.

Looks like they also gave Banksy some serious money. The couple who went to see his show also supposedly purchased around $400,000 of his work.

NyaraD....so are we supposed to stop helping in the ways that we can help? Are we supposed to turn our backs on those that have needs? What are you saying that no one makes ANY difference in any one's life? I don't believe that for one moment. If you can help ONE person to have a better life, you are achieving something great. For each of us to help those less fortunate than we are is a privilege because we are so privileged. The problem is the monies that are given are not used correctly. The food shipped to the countries is stolen by robbers and sold on the black market. Whoever has the guns is in charge. What we need are thousands of UN peacekeepers in the African counties. Only then might we really make a difference. Plus, there are some places in this world that are inhabitable. Parts of Africa are inhabitable right now because there is not enough rain. These people need to be moved to where they can live a decent life. The raping and killing in Darfur and the Sudan has got to stop, but it will not until TROOPS are there with bigger guns than the rapists. Only then do the people have a chance. In parts of Africa the men send their wives into towns to have sex for money so that they might buy a little food. The women bring home AIDS and the cycle of AIDS begins anew. Men and women dying leaving the grandmothers to care for numerous children. If the children are not born with AIDS they are lucky. Men without jobs. No way to raise crops. Disease killing able bodied men and women. Millions of orphans. Starvation everywhere. If everyone in the world sent 1 dollar to African charities, do you know how many billions that would be? It would be $6,548,711,693. Do you not think $6 billion would help Africa? What we spend in the US in ONE month in IRAQ would solve most of Africa's problems. So don't tell us that our help is not needed nor useful.

I don't think the people on the recieving end are really seeing a difference, by the sounds of it.

I think charities do have to show that they are putting their money in the right place. But its impossible to help all of those millions of people at the same time. However people do give out of the goodness of their hearts they do care. I've seen the pictures of Angelina in Africa with the children. Despite her personal life she does show that she is a true humanitarian that is a beautiful quality to have.

Nyaradzom, so you would rather that celebrities (and others like me) just not do ANYTHING at all? I'm a pragmatic person (I'd like to think), but I cannot for the life of me see any logic in that kind of thinking at all.

I don't think they give to charties for attention. They act like they care.

It's not the fact that Brad and Angie give to charity good for them if they do and score if they get publicity but it is unwarranted to treat people like they are gods or they are something better than the rest of hollywood because they are highlighting a plight in the world which has been highlighted enough times and by enough celebs and won't change. They make a difference but as a person who comes from Africa a continent which people are always fundraising and campaigning for truth be told they do not make an iota of a difference. So people donate big money w but the people who need it the most will never see it. Stars are campaigning for Darfur right now George Clooney and Mira Sorvino they get their point across (and the publicity)but nothing will change and nothing will happen. Just look at Rwanda and the Darfur thing has been ongoing for a few years and everyone has done their save Darfur bit but look at it nothing has been done. There are so many charities in the world and coming from a country which has all these agencies it's like fighting a losing battle. People act as if Brad and Angelina are changing the world and it takes more than one couple to do that but let me remind you of Live Aid and what Bob Geldof and all tried to do. Where is ethiopia now still in the same quagmire of famine and hunger. wher were all these celebrity humanitarians and this is not only Brangelina but every single charity donor and UN goodwill ambassador when people were dying in Niger and it took the world at least a month to react by the time which it was too late for a lot of people, and the honest truth is that the UN has no power at all believe me coming from the country I come from I know, people have appealed for help but still they do nothing. Like I said before it's not about money cos you have no clue wher your money goes but about removing the vermin that are runnig these nations and throwing back to the dark ages. Celebrities have no clout in these countries it's the presidents of the powerful nations that can do something to change the reality of millions of people. All people get are statistics and what these celebs have seen in 3 days at a refugee camp which is probably better than a lot of places in these countries noone really knows what the reality of the situation is not even the agencies. there is a lot of S**T out there and it will tke more than million dollar donations and stuff to stop it or even help it.

If it bugs some of you soooo much to read about their charity work, then why don't you just NOT read it? Somedays, I just don't care to hear/read about Paris' latest sexcapades or her daily idiotic stunt. So, I don't. And I also don't go ballistic anytime there's an article about her. Why exert the energy? Seriously, I can just see the proverbial bulging vein on the forehead anytime some of you post to a Brangelina thread. I mean, they could come out publicy with a cure for cancer and inevitably some cynicist will come here with a "well...what about AIDS, huh?" It's such strangely misdirected (but transparent) anger. I implore some of the posters here to examine exactly WHY you are so bothered by the publicity they get for their charity work. Is it *really* because other people do charity work too, and they don't get credit for it? So basically, people should only donate their time and money if they do it anonymously, because it's just selfish and self-serving and heinous and wrong to be acknowledged for doing something good. That, seriously, makes not a lick of sense to me. Does it matter WHY it's done? It's DONE. That's what matters. Do any of you really imagine a charitable receipient saying, "Well, you're only doing this because of blah blah blah. No, I won't take your donation." I personally, want to hear about every single donation of time and money made from every single celebrity, including Brad and Angelina. It makes me AWARE of stuff I might not have otherwise been aware of. Thanks to one of Angelina's recent spotlights, my husband and I donated a substantial sum to a specific organization. Would I have known about it otherwise? Very likely, no. And call me an attention whore or a self-serving snob, but I told every damn person I know about the charity!! I did a good thing and it *felt* good! There is never such a thing as too much exposure when it comes to a crisis issue. Never, ever. So, maybe some of you read about the publicity, get all pissy because it's Brad and Angie, go home and forget about it. Well, there are other people who actually pay attention (me included). And we are the people who are inspired enough by their work to want to follow suit, in albeit a smaller, but not less significant way. That "donate anonymously or you're self-serving" is such a crock anyway. Many people donate anonymously because they don't want to be hounded by OTHER organizations. Once you donate (publicy), your name is part of a public list accessible to other charities. It is actually the reason my husband and I donate anonymously. But Brad and Angelina, well -- I suppose they don't care if they are hounded by other organizations. It's what they appear to enjoy doing -- helping out as much as they can, when they can. Like someone has said before, they are donating their time and money. How can that EVER be wrong? I don't care if they do it because they crave attention, want to deflect their personal life, etc. (which I don't buy for a second). It doesn't matter to me WHY. It just matters that they DO. I think the charitable receipients will agree with me on this one.

So about the attention they got my attention. I was like $1 million? 20 million children orphaned? and honestly I went back to do my work. It's sad but honestly I wasn't like yeah totally I'm like going to make my donation today and by the time 7pm rolls around it will be just another statistic I read. The problem is not poverty, disease etc it's corrupt leaders who are impoverishing their nations and making dire situations even worse. People need to get these leaders off cosas long as they are there believe MSF will still be working in these natins and the statistics will be even higher. And if we are going to talk about slefless philanthropists and celebs what about Bono and Bob Geldof and Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet? Ang and Brad are not doing anything special.

I'm a little confused by the mean-spiritedness displayed here. Why are we condemning anyone for good works? I don't care about Brad and Angie one way or the other, but so few people spend any time worrying about others, let alone helping them, and both these individuals do. As for why they announce their donations, its because they have set up a foundation, and part of the function of a foundation is to build awareness and fundraise for its cause. Constant media coverage can be annoying, but for god's sake, all you have to do is turn the channel or skip that blog. Don't let media saturation blind you to good people doing good works. And believe me, if anyone in the world were dong the kind of works Brangelina, or Bill Gates/Warren Buffet were doing, then we would be hearing about it everywhere.
