Chelsea Clinton in Glamour Magazine 2013

Chelsea Clinton Is Making 2014 the "Year of the Baby"

Chelsea Clinton and her dad, former President Bill Clinton, are featured in Glamour's November issue, sharing insights about their relationship, their work, and the family's plans for the future — including Hillary's possible presidential run. After several years out of the political spotlight, Chelsea is now joining the family business as vice chair of the new Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, originally called the William J. Clinton Foundation. As she adopts a new role professionally, she's also preparing for a change in her personal life, saying that she and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, are planning to expand their family soon. Chelsea and her dad also opened up about the family dynamics, finding balance, and past public scrutiny, including how they handled bad press when Chelsea was young and Bill was running for governor. Take a look at some of the pair's best quotes, then head over to Glamour for the full story:

Chelsea

  • On starting a family: "We sat down and said, 'Here's what we want to do.' The first thing on the list was simple: We want, God willing, to start a family. So we decided we were going to make 2014 the Year of the Baby. And please, call my mother and tell her that. She asks us about it every single day."
  • On Hillary 2016: "I'll support my mother in whatever she does. Always."
  • On media scrutiny: "When people say crazy stuff about me or my family, I don't take it seriously. Someone didn't like what I wore? I don't care about that. But there's also criticism that I take seriously — if the foundation wasn't represented in the way that it should be? That you have to learn from."
  • On Bill and Hillary as parents: "My parents were definitely on the incentive side of parenting. Like, they told me that my father had learned to read when he was three. So, of course, I thought I had to too. The first thing I learned to read was the newspaper. I had these word flash cards — this is so nerdy — and we would practice every day. When I learned 500 words, my parents gave me a little trophy. When I learned 1,500 words, I got another one."

  • On leaving Wall Street: "I loved working on Wall Street. I loved the meritocracy of it and the camaraderie of the trading floor. There was one metric for success: Did you make or lose money? I think we need to care about the metrics of success in life, and I'm a pretty competitive person. But whether I made the company $2 or $2 million just didn't matter to me. I didn't fundamentally care about making money."
  • On finding balance: "I was working full time and going to school at night and on the weekends. It was just crazy. At one point a month had gone by, and Marc — my then boyfriend, now husband — and I hadn't gone out on a date. I was like, I don't want to be this person. I want to be a person who cares where she's investing her time and energy. And I want to be a good wife, daughter, and friend."
  • On helping to make it a better world for her future children: "My grandmother was determined that everyone feel a sense of optimism and opportunity. Marc and I want to make sure we're doing that. This period of our lives is not just a tribute to her, it's inspired by her. And it's for when we have our own children — I want to help make sure we've got a world I want them to live in."
  • On her husband's support: "Marc is in so many ways a feminist. I love that about him."

Bill

  • On Chelsea working for the family's foundation: "She also has all of this management experience and a keen sense of how things should operate . . . We're the fastest-growing foundation in the world, with millions of people whose lives depend on us. And she's helping us become sustainable."
  • On Chelsea's tendency to help others: "When I ran for president, some of the kids were being mean to her at school — you know, kids can be cruel — and this huuuge guy came up to the group that was harassing her and said, 'She's my friend. She helped me learn to read when nobody else would, so don't you do this.' And it all went away. Now, she'd never said anything to me about what was happening or what she did for this guy. Chelsea has always just figured out what was going on and found a way to help."
  • On how the family handled public scrutiny when Chelsea was young: "They were saying some pretty rough things about me. And she was reading about it. We started a game at breakfast where Hillary, Chelsea, and I would be either me or one of my opponents. By the end of the election, she was defending me better than I could defend myself."

OMFG she looks like a Hilary clone with her father's schnoz. There's a beautiful irony in a flaming liberal who managed to escape abortion }(wonder who Hilary eliminated from the gene pool) with an abortion fetish that celebrates the year of the baby. Too rich.
