Sticker I do hope that when you say 'They're corrupt, they kill their own poeple' you are in fact talking about the Chinese Government and not the whole of China, because that isn't true, and I think you'll find that most countries around the world even America, kill their own poeple. The film was actually banned, as some have said, because of the scene where Chinese gangsters are trying to buy weapons from Jack Nicholson's character. Nothing more, it's silly but it's true, but I guess thy do have Infernal Affairs so they're only missing out on Leo, poor them!!

they're corrupt, they kill their own people, but don't ever critisize their politics. Many people are against the regime, so they are suspicious of everything, they also don't trust each other. And don't you think that you can come there and do humanitarian work, and they will be thankful. They are even suspicious of people who just want to help. So it's possible that you and I don't see the issue, but for them it's a big issue. I mean the poor people can't even look things up on wikipedia, and it is not that everything on wikipedia is about china or so.

Ummm... I don't get it. The Departed is a remake of the Chinese film Infernal Affairs. There's nothing political about The Departed. It's just a violent cops and robbers movie. And compared to a lot of Chinese Cinema, it's nowhere near as violent. So I'm just confused as to why they would ban it.

Ok some people here are really ignorant. I mean i am not so into politics and all but i remember that we once discussed dictatorial governments, censure, communism and propaganda and all. So it's obviously some political issue. And it's not that america has nothing to do with that, the influence the american government has on some media is unhealthy.

Slashyelizabeth is right. There is a scene where Chinese are trying to buy weapons from Jack Nicholson's character. Chinese government certainly don't like that. Although I personally don't like any banning, Chinese audience are not missing much. They already saw the original Hong Kong classic which is better in my opinion.

I don't get why they banned it :? The only reason I could think of is because of the violence? But it wasn't NEARLY as violent as I'd expected it to be, in fact I thought it was pretty tame for a gangster/mafia movie!

Brad Pitt is the producer, and he was also banned from China for life after he did 7 Years In Tibet. Maybe that's also factor? Longshot but you never know.

they actually did say why. apparently there's a scene where china's acquisition (fictional, i guess) of some weapons is mentioned. they didn't take too kindly to that.

don't know if it's the reason that it's banned but The Departed is the American remake of the Hong Kong movie "Infernal Affairs", which in itself was a great successful movie. Sorcesee didn't get any awards for the movie because the Hong Kong version was so well made. S just made it American...

China bans everything that might compete with China's movie industry (which current is barely able to sustain itself).
