Do You Agree With Jay-Z That "We Are the World" Shouldn't Have Been Remade?

Do You Agree With Jay-Z That "We Are the World" Shouldn't Have Been Remade?

Jay-Z arrived at London's Heathrow Airport this morning after spending the weekend in Dallas, where he joined LeBron James on Saturday for their annual 2 Kings dinner. The meal coincided with NBA's All-Star weekend, but Jay-Z was more interested in discussing the updated version of "We Are the World" that debuted during the Olympics. Turns out, he wasn't a fan. "I think 'We Are the World' is like 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched," he said. "I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts. . . I think it's time for us to make a new [song]." Jay-Z's critique comes despite the star power behind the cover version, but tell us what you think — do you agree with Jay-Z that "We Are the World" shouldn't have been remade?

the lack of talent and creativity in the music industry and hollyweird is pitiful...with all the drugs these people do, nobody can come up with one original idea? I get the best ideas when I'm stoned lol

agree 22. since when is the usa the country of the world. i mean it isnt our job to support the world! if we could first take care of our own, then we could help others. but when we ignore problems at home and constantly pour billions into other countries, it gets a little old . i never liked the the original and havent listened to this new version, todays pop stars i have zero respect for, NONE, not one is original or interesting. and the money making machine has ruined music. the only place to find good music is to look underground. or the past.

Jealousy? That doesn't make sense. Personally, I cannot get behind this stuff. I care about people in my tribe, my nation. I'm "horrified" by the lack of support we give to many suffering Americans, children. For a just comparison, does anyone know how much aid we provided to victims of the multiple earthquakes that have occurred in Southeast Asia over the past few years? Many were also living in poverty.

I'm with Jay on this one. I think the intent of everyone who participated in the song was genuine and right. I don't think "we are the world" was a song they should have touched. With all of the talent that was in that group of people one would think they could've come up with something completely different and it would've worked.

i was born after the original version was released and i remember being a child and loving the song. honestly i am from the "developing world" and consider it a privilege to be able to live and work in the US. I am truly horrified with all these selfish comments regarding Katrina vs Haiti. Not one of the comments comes from someone from such a poverty stricken place as Haiti. The comments seem to stem from jealousy rather than camaradie. Do you know whats it like when 90% of the population live below poverty level? (help was def directed to LA and that is not the case there) I myself visited and worked for community service efforts in the region and I applaud the efforts directed to Haiti. While I am not from there I could only hope and wish that should something happen to my home country people would be equaly as generous. So yes I am in favor of the remake. Lionel and Quincy said the re make had been requested many times so why disagree for this effort and not for others. The original was for Africa this was for a child of Africa... it is for people that cannot help themselves... a country that needs outside help because without it they would crumble. Please lets be empathetic and help our foreign brothers after all without selflessness one is not complete

I think that it's great that they did it for Haiti, but I agree that it would have been better if they'd done a new song. And if they absolutely couldn't think of anything new to put out there (doubtful), then they at least should have gotten legitimate talent to do the song. I'm sorry, but Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber do not cut it.

I agree. The original was more heartfelt versus this version that just seemed like a throw away. Somethings don't need to be redone.

i'm totally with jay here. i respect that the proceeds are going to haiti, but they would have been so much better off writing a new song. the remake was a huge letdown, as is the originality in popular music and mainstream films today overall. there was a reason behind so many musicians turning down the offer to be a part of this. also, the fact that people like miley cyrus and justin bieber were allowed to partake in this was just ridiculous. they and their music will have absolutely no relevance 25 years from now and i felt that it was disrespectful to the artists in the original, especially the late great michael jackson. hopefully in the future entertainers can remember to leave the classics alone.

I didn't like the original much, musically speaking, but it's still way better than the remake. (Although Jennifer Hudson sang well.) The original was a rushed American response to Midge Ure and Bob Geldof's song Do They Know It's Christmas, which featured lots of UK musicians and I always thought it was a better song, not to mention the catalyst which inspired We Are the World, Live Aid, and several other musical efforts for Ethiopia.

@ Anonymous #1, the song is called "We are the WORLD", not "We are the USA". The original song was released to help starving people in Africa - also a cause outside the U.S. The idea is that the entire world comes together in a time of great crisis for people who have NO other means.
