Do You Think Celebrity Endorsements Had Any Bearing in Barack Obama's Election?

Last night history was made when we elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. Yesterday we got a look at stars hitting the polls and there hasn't been a day in recent memory where we didn't have celebrities campaigning in some way — mostly for Barack Obama. Now that he's been elected and it sounds like the young voters finally came out in droves, what do you think — did the many celebrity endorsements, PSAs, ads, and blogs have an influence on the election?

Yes. The only reason I voted for Obama is because Heidi and Spencer endorsed McCain. HAHAHAHAHAHA, whiplash that was AWESOME!

I think that they might influence people to a small extent, but I don't think it helped Obama to win. I made my decision to vote for Obama long before any celebrities endorsed him.

I don't understand why celebrities get so involved during election year. Some of them have no idea what they're talking about. What gives them the right to be such experts. I thought that was hilarious... Madonna comparing McCain to Hitler???? please he supports capitalism not liberal socialism. The beauty of this country is that you can be anything you want and can make as much money as you can and you're only limited to yourself. So what's the pay off in working so hard when someone is coming in office and decides to share your wealth with others... please. Did anyone read the statistics on Illinois. Body count: In the last six months: 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago; 221 killed in Iraq. Chicago.... Who Runs it: Senators: Barack Obama & Dick Durbin Rep: Jesse Jackson Jr., Illinois Gov: Rod Blogojevich, Illinois House leader Mike Madigan, Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike), Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley (son of Mayor Richard J. Daley) .....our leadership in Illinois.....all Democrats. Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago. Of course, they're all blaming each other! Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any! State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country. Cook County (Chicago) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. (Look 'em up if you want). Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country. This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois. And he's gonna 'fix' Washington politics for us?

My bad. Perhaps 30% of the population can't vote for different reasons (age, felon, etc.). It would be more correct to say that the majority of those who voted cared for Obama and not all Americans were waiting for him.

Love Sarah, Carol225k, that's not entirely true. 64 million voted Obama. 56 million voted McCain. Not even half of the nation's population bothered to vote. So I would say that Obama is the man that about a fourth of the country cared to have. The vast majority of the country did not care one way or the other (apparently) if Obama became President.

No way He won because he is the man that all The American People had waited for ,not because stupid celebrities!!!

I would say they had some impact, but I know I didn't vote for Obama just because celebrities endorsed him. I voted for him because I share the same beliefs as him, and hopefully, that's why the majority of America voted for him, too.

I would like to say no, but it's probably yes so I went with other! To day I sure hope it didn't have an influence! Anyone that's votes a certain way because a celebrity did is crazy.

I agree with Jude C, Futonfigher, UrbanBohemian. Obama is one single man, he is not a superman. I think all of you have to reunite and try to help to resolve the problems with positives thoughts and positive attitudes. The whole planet want changes for you and for the rest. You have democracy, so you elected a good President but he really needs all the help he can get to rebuild USA. You know what? I would vote on Oprah W. to be the President of USA for ever! Seriously guys!!!

maybe in or before the primaries, and in the aspect of getting out the vote

Wow, I sure hope not. Seeing the results of this poll have me questioning. I just hate that I had to see that yucky dress again.

I believe that Obama's win was solely a testimate to his message, goals, and avid supporters. The only celeb that had any effect on my view is potentially Oprah, and only because she endorsed his book several years ago when I first began to love Obama.

No offense but that notion is pretty off the wall, as if celebrities ego's are not swollen enough, please POP lets not give more credit than is due at such a serious, historic time in this country's history. To even suggest such a thing I believe is irresponsible and misleading to your younger readers and the answer to the question is ABSOLUTELEY NO.

they have a lot of pull with younger voters. for some younger voters that don't pay that much attention to the actual issues and just get caught up in the spectical of it all, celebs totally have a lot to do with the out come of their votes.

I said yes because there are people in this world who follow certain celebs tirelessly. It's a bit sad but true. I celebs should endorse voting more then the candidate (but it's a free country). With that said, I'm sure the majority of the voters looked into who the celeb was endorsing and decided for themselves. At least I hope.

they did provide alot of funding for obama, which lead him to outspend everybody in the race and leading to the most expensive election in history, so yes I think they helped.

I don't think they made peoples mind, but they did help Obama to spread the word, especially among the younger section, but at the end of the day they didn't made any difference.

i dont even care who the celebs endorse. its who i believe would run the country best.

i said other, but would have said "YES because some people won't think for themselves" There are many MANY that do think for themselves(Thank Goodness) but it scares me when I hear people say "Well if (insert celebrity name) is this much in favor of the guy, he must be great!" That's worrisome. My biggest fear is that many young voters elected him because he's charismatic (Which he is) they think he's good looking (Though I don't agree there) and a great speaker (Which he is). While those are great qualities in a person, I sincerely hope that people DIDN'T base their vote on that because they are not required qualities for running this country.

I don't think the endorsements made a difference but the financial contributions sure did.

I think its repulsive when celebrities endorse candidates. They, of all people, should know how stupid people are and that people will buy/vote/do anything they do . People should make their own decisions. so i voted undecided because i know it did have something to do with it, but I'm in denial.

well i can't say for sure how i feel - but i know that they were such a turn-OFF for me. i don't need a celebrity who can't relate to me telling me who i should vote for. i really got a bit upset and for lack of a better word 'disgusted' about the whole endorsement thing.

Some celebrities have very fanatical supporters who will swallow anything they say, and they make full use of their power. Madonna played footage at her concerts likening McCain to Hitler, and Obama to Gandhi. But that's a whole other subject of course, that celebrities think we want to hear their 2 cents on each and every subject. I just like to see what they wear on the red carpet!

What a gorgeous family. I just love them! :)

I am pretty sure Howard did the same thing to McCain supporters. I can also be on a celebrity site and gossip about them that doesnt mean that i am going to blindly follow them. In the end, people decide to do things for different reasons- noone can read minds so noone can really know..BUT completely accrediting a candidates success (or failure) to celebrities is giving them too much credit and underminding our intellingence!
