I read all three of the books and saw the Swedish movies. Both books and movies were excellent and in my opinion can't be improved upon. I am a huge fan of foreign film and not to fond of the mundane stuff Hollywood cranks out, but will go see this movie just for comparisons sake.

I don't understand why everyone loves the Swedish version better than the American. In the Swedish version the characters were flat and undeveloped. Relationships were never explained and the male lead was far less attractive than the character in the book. I guess a lot of commentators never read the series. Having read the book I have to say that Fincher does a much better job of capturing the essence of Lisbeth. I saw the movie in a packed theater and the women cheered Lisbeth's revenge. I would agree with the critic this movie is not for everyone because of the "intensity" of the story line...and I believe it is definitely one of Fincher better works. If you have an "open mind" I believe you would enjoy it.

I just got back. Rooney Mara did a fine job, but the Swedish version is much better. It definitely deserves at least a rent, and it compliments the Swedish version adding details of the book that were left out of the film.
