You Need to Watch Jon Stewart's Take on the NFL and Homophobia

Feb 11 2014 - 9:15am

College football star Michael Sam publicly came out [1] on Sunday, prompting conversations about sexuality and the NFL, and Jon Stewart [2] addressed all the buzz on The Daily Show. Michael's considered to be a likely pick for the NFL, and if he were to be drafted this May, he'd be the first publicly gay player in the league's history. Michael told ESPN [3], "I understand how big this is. It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be . . . I want to be a football player in the NFL."

On Monday night's show, Jon highlighted how Michael's fans, teammates, and fellow players have reacted. He noted that Michael's college teammates have known since August, and they kept it "respectfully private." And since the NFL isn't exactly known for its lack of controversy, he added, "No pro team wants the type of controversy having a gay player is going to cause. If he had just been convicted of DUI vehicular manslaughter, or obstruction of justice in connection with a murder, or have been accused of sexual assault, or screamed the n-word at a concert, or killed a bunch of dogs and buried them in his f*cking yard, you know — NFL material."
