Kristen Bell Says She Was "Craving Something More Adult" With House of Lies

Kristen Bell stars in the new Showtime series House of Lies as consultant Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a role that's a bit racier than her past work as characters like Veronica Mars. The actress and I sat down to chat about the new show, whether she curses as much as Jeannie in real life, and the challenges she's come across so far. Bell also talked about her upcoming film Everybody Loves Whales, and we addressed her fandom of The Hunger Games, and Bell confessed the lengths she'd go to to be part of the movies.

I dropped an F-bomb within the first sentence. Mm-hmm. And it's like, you know what? Listen. It's not like, I mean, people swear. I 've played so young for so long and I'm not that young anymore. This is a much more risque roll than what you usually choose, so what drew you to it? I think I had been subconsciously craving something more adult, and not even in the sense of it being racy or it being provocative, but just, I've played so young for so long and I'm not that young anymore. And I think that I've had, you know, story lines where I've had parents or I've been in my early 20's, and I was like, 'I need to embrace the fact that I am 31 years old.' And so I was craving a project that had a lot more adult interaction. So, is that what you're looking for in most of your roles now? I know you have "Everybody Loves Wales" coming up, so are you looking for the same kind of grown-up feeling? I never really know what I'm looking for until I I mean there's no, I imagine I would be very unsuccessful if I just said, "I only want to do this" and then waited for it to come to me, you know this business is really a lot about throwing a bunch of spaghetti at the wall seeing what sticks, cause you become attached to projects or you develop them or you audition for them and sometimes you book them and sometimes you don't. It's a lot less contrived than I think it appears from the outside so, with "Whales" I just I really liked liked to script. It was wonderful to read, it was really story but I'm not necessarily only looking for provocative material. Well on that note, I was just wondering if your mouth is as dirty as Jeannie's in private. unfortunately, yes I think, yes. Yeah. I'm glad you didn't punctuate that with anything else. I I did on the panel. I dropped enough bombs within first sentence. But you know what, people swear. Do you feel like it shouldn't be that big a deal? You think there's a lot of nudity and there's lots of sex and on House of Lies, what do you think that should be left is a big deal? I mean, for this type of show, it's not a big deal. I mean, we don't think it's a big deal. It's not something you put on at 5pm when you have your kids at the dinner table, for sure. I mean, there is content that is appropriate and is not appropriate for a certain age group. But if you're an adult and your watching it, I think that the storyline is probably not unlike things you've experienced behind closed doors in your real life. I mean, I don't know a person that hasn't sworn in their life or that, you know, hasn't ever kissed someone or had sex. You know, it feels like they're all adults. It's a very safe space to, sort of, explore more provocative storyline. Has anything so far in House of Lies pushed your boundaries, where you're kind of like, I don't know about this? My character, Jeannie, plays a lot with her sexuality and that is something that was foreign to me, cause I'm very comfortable being cute but I'm not very comfortable playing sexy. It's, I really don't really have that gear and it It makes me giggle and it makes me laugh and it makes me insecure. And so there was a scene where I had to dance in my underwear, but not the cute dance in your underwear like The sexy provocative dance in your underwear, and I was my heart was beating so fast. I was so nervous because I have never certainly never done that on camera before you know my woman hood just right there but the scene was written by a woman and she really talked me through it so I felt a lot more comfortable. Finally, I just have to ask I know you are a huge hunger games fan, are you still gunning for a role in the second movie. Of course, I'll be an extra in the second movie. I'll be an extra or I'll just be just be one those people that wakes up at you know four in the morning to try and get a peek at what the set looks like.
