Leo Adopts South African Child (kinda)

Leo is one of those celebs that is intent on making the world a better place (just as long as he doesn't have to give up his private jet!). He's been working on an environmentally conscious reality show, he's an advocate for fuel-efficient cars, and he even worked with orphans while he was filming Blood Diamond in South Africa. While he was there he evidently met a girl from an orphanage that he's decided to "adopt." Instead of taking her back to the states he has decided to send her a monthly check and communicate with her by phone. So it's not quite the hands-on involvement that Madonna and the Jolie-Pitts have committed to but at least he's giving this child a chance at a better life. Also a big congrats to Leo on the 2 SAG nominations he scored today!

Write to him. Maybe he'll adopt you, too. ;)

P.S. I was being glib; I know. I hope my humor isn't lost in translation. This is a serious thing, and I applaud him. I was just struck by a funny thought, that's all. Hope it doesn't offend anyone.

I give him credit for helping out where he can. If we all did what we can (regardless how little it may be), we'd be drastically better-off. But, seriously? **quoting Pop** ". . .he has decided to send her a monthly check and communicate with her by phone." He has decided he can be help by emulating the skill-set of an absentee father? That's funny. (I know, I know -- adoption was a poor word choice; he is obviously SPONSORING this child -- and that is still a great thing, and this child will receive great benefit from it. But reading that bit struck me as really funny, because, you know. . . If only we could be like Leo and become absentee parents to the world's unwanted children, they could know the true meaning of the word FAMILY. :p ) No, seriously -- he's great and all that, but the guy IS a tool. And he has a face that just looks like it should be punched. Other than that, and his pompous preachy attitude, he's just fine. Sponsoring a child is a phenomenal work of good-will. It is self-less, and will (no doubt) make a huge difference in her (is this child a she?) life -- BRAVO. Good on him and his punch-happy head!

Also, kudos to Leo. I'm looking into doing the same through World Vision. I too have preferences. I definitely want to "adopt" a girl because they are the most likely to be deprived of an education and I want to make sure that she lives in a region that doesn't oppress women so she'll be able to help others without risking her life.

Hey everyone who whines about stars not adopting American kids: what are YOU doing? Even if you don't have money, you can volunteer for CASA or take foster children or be a big brother/sister. Also, the poorest kids in America are FAR better off than the average kid in some parts of the world. My neighbors had a loooong, emotionally draining experience adopting their son who they cared for from the age of about 4 mos. His birth mother used drugs and he had a lot of health problems which most people couldn't deal with, but here's this wonderful family of 3 who had the love and means (stay-at-home mom and well-off lawyer dad) to take care of his unique needs. It's not like adopting from another country is as easy as doing it the old-fashioned way as it def takes more than 9 mos), but there are just fewer hurdles. For a family trying to add a new one regardless of the child's nationality, adopting a kid from another country is just easier most of the time.

Although I personally think Leo is a pompous booty, he totally has my respect. He chooses great films and performs extraordinarily in them. Add his efforts and charities to that, I just can't not like the guy.

this is pretty cool...i wouldnt really call it an "adoption" but more of a "sponosor" type of thing...whatever way you look at it he did a really good thing and it's bad ass... "stay far from timid, only make moves when your hearts in it and live the phrase sky's the limit."

I agree it is called sponsoring not adopting...he is clearly not in any position to adopt being single and very busy with his career. I love that he is making an effort to do something good

Good for him. Helping a child in any way is a good thing. Now someone needs to help me. I'm being forced to watch the remake of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. I'm ready to run from the room screaming.

That's a bright idea. ; ) Not taking the child away from home country but yet giving her a good opportunity.

Exactly, sponser. That's what Madonna should have done. But noooo.

I agree about the sponser the child thing. I saw it in About Schmit. I also think he looked alot better in his Titanic days.

I think the word "adopt" should stop being bandied about in regard to what Leo did until it can be verified. It sounds more like what he did is sponsor a child, not adopt one. More like what you can do through Save the Children. I seriously doubt he legally adopted this child. Either way, it speaks highly of him that he did anything at all. Good job, Leo.
