Natalie Portman Black Swan Dancing Controversy

Natalie Portman's Black Swan Dancing Controversy Continues — Do You Care If She Performed Her Own Moves?

Black Swan's leading lady, Natalie Portman, swept award season with an Oscar, Golden Globe, and a SAG for her work in the ballet thriller. Natalie's been lying low in NYC since the excitement wrapped up last month, but now the actress is back in the spotlight. She's in the middle of a controversy over how much of the movie she actually danced in after her body double claimed to have performed most of the technical scenes. Her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, and director Darren Aronofsky have both come to Natalie's defense. and now her costar, Mila Kunis, has spoken up to say Natalie "danced her a*s off." Natalie clearly put in plenty of hard work, but we want to know — do you even care if she performed her own moves?

sunnyheart I agree with you, but that is NOT what Natalie and Mila have been saying. Mila said every ounce of the dancing in the film is Natalie, minus her feet being en pointe. The entire movie shows Natalie's character dancing en pointe..so if she didn't do that then how could all the dancing be her?. Mila also said she herself learned how to dance en pointe...which is a lie. She trained for 5 months and at 26 you just can't do that. I don't doubt Natalie worked very hard but she implied she is a dancing protege. Before the Oscars they heavily denied the stunt double's scenes making it into the actual film. Darren said he left it all on the "cutting room floor". Sarah was responding to Benjamin's insulting statements and I don't blame her. Everyone calling her names is just in Natalie's corner.

If you really listen to what each person is saying, they are all right. Natalie Portman and the director say she does 80% of the scenes, most of which, are from the waist up. So Natalie is right that she worked very hard to get the figure, the posture, the neck, the head, and the arms correct--which in the ballet world is a lot of work. However, Sarah Lane claims she did 95% of the "real dancing." The director confirms the fouettes are her footwork, not Natalie's. The diagonal across the floor scenes are hers, not Natalie. Across the floor work, continuous shots, fouettes... these are all "real" dancing--the kind of ballet that it takes decades to master. So, I don't see any problem with Sarah's claim that she did 95% of the "real" dancing; she did. And I don't see any problem with Natalie's claim that she worked her ass off literally to do her part; she did. If people knew more about ballet, they would understand both ladies' arguments better. But WHO CARES?

I do care, because a lot of the praise she was getting for all her awards were directly BECAUSE of all the dancing she trained for and did in the movie. Or not, as the case may be. I think the stunt double deserves a heck of credit.

I could care less. That's what Hollywood calls "Movie Magic" it's a movie for actors, not a ballet. She owed us acting not dancing. There are stunts, doubles, and voice overs all the time, this girl is hating because of the Oscar win.

I don't care that there was a body double but Darren, the choreographer Benjamin, Natalie and Mila denied the body double making it into the final cut. They lied.

If it wasn't her who did the moves they could at least give credit to the woman who did. Somehow I don't think Nathalie did all of this considering it takes years upon years to learn this stuff. Give credit where credit is due.

I'm over it at this point, but I definitely think during Natalie's "campaign" for the Oscar everyone involved with Black Swan most definitely painted the picture that Natalie did most of, if not all, the dancing. Clearly, she didn't. A lot of people are quick to say Natalie got the Oscar for her acting, not the dancing, so it shouldn't matter about the double...but I think the dancing is so integral to the role that you can't separate the two. Take away the dancing and it's quite an average performance. Much like if you would take away the singing by Reese in Walk the Line---would she still have won? Many probably voted for her thinking that she transformed into this amazing ballerina. Which she did on some level I suppose, but it would've been decent of her to give Sarah Lane some props.
