Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison For Killing His Girlfriend

On Tuesday, Olympic track star Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Back in September, Oscar was found guilty of culpable homicide, but not murder. After a lengthy and high-profile trial and deliberation in South Africa, Judge Thokozile Masipa ruled that, after reviewing the evidence, she had concluded that he was not guilty of the murder charge. However, she did announce that she had found him guilty of the lesser manslaughter charge. The maximum prison sentence for culpable homicide in South Africa is 15 years in prison.

Oscar killed his girlfriend on Valentine's Day in 2013 while she was locked in his bathroom. The double-amputee sprinter, who gained fame for competing in the 2012 Olympics, claimed that he had shot into the bathroom because he thought that Reeva was an intruder.
