Paula Deen Gives Her First Postcontroversy Interview: "I Am Not a Racist"

Paula Deen sat down with Matt Lauer on the Today show for her first interview since a controversial deposition emerged where she admitted to using the N-word in the past. Since her remarks have been made public, Paula has been fired from The Food Network, which hosted her cooking shows, and dropped from Smithfield, one of her product sponsors.

In her tearful and intense interview with Matt, Paula admitted that she had used the N-word during a distressful situation many years ago and hasn't used it since. When asked, point blank, if she is a racist, Paula said no. She continued, "I believe that . . . every one of God's creatures was created equal. I believe that everyone should be treated equal, that's the way I was raised and that's the way I live my life." When asked about being let go from her sponsors, Paula said, "Would I have fired me? Knowing me? No. I am so very thankful for the partners I have who believe in me." Watch Paula's interview to hear more from her side on the controversy, including if she wished she hadn't lied about using racist remarks during that now infamous deposition.
