Photos of Madonna, David Banda in NYC and With Lourdes in Malawi, Adoption Delayed

Madonna Heads to Malawi For Mercy but Adoption Delayed

Madonna held David Banda's hand around NYC on Saturday before heading to Malawi with him and Lourdes on Sunday. She's in Africa to adopt a little girl named Mercy, although there are already complications. Earlier today the singer went to a court hearing, where she was told the adoption ruling would be delayed until Friday. Most of you don't think she should get preferential treatment, and Mercy's grandmother went as far as saying Madonna's stealing her granddaughter. Despite controversy, it worked out last time Madonna went through the process, and in the meantime she has lots to take care of in Malawi — including introducing David to his biological father and bringing Lourdes along to look at plans for a local school yesterday.

I'm not getting into the whole adoption thing (though I do, too, wonder why she's choosing a country with a confusing system to adopt from), but I will say that Lourdes is so gorgeous.

Well Emily her father has never been located. He could be dead to.

So you guys would rather children live in an orphanage than to have a better life just because it's Madonna who's adopting this child? Unbelievable!!

She has to adopt in other countries...the US would never approve her.

Why not she donates to the orphanage, or Mercy's family???Or find someone without a family?

Another thing. According to Malawi law, single parents who live outside of the country are restricted by law to adopt children. And this girl isn't an orphan. Her father is still alive. No, I'm going to give my opinion (not that it means much, but anyways): I don't think Malawi should allow Madonna to adopt this girl.

Nobody knows the exact circumstances- neither you nor I.I just said that's what the grandmother claims. But even in the States, oftentimes guardianship is favoured towards kin and not people outside of the family. And, if the orphanage did indeed put Mercy up, then the grandmother has every right to contest that. But for Madonna's sake, I should hope that if ever she adopts next, this doesn't happen again.

There is nothing wrong with Madonna trying to help that little girl. Whats wrong is the system. The system that these people have children they can't take care of and unlike in America get any type of assistance. The Grandmother may not want her granddaughter to be adopted but she doesn't have the means to care for her. On top of that she is an older woman and what will happen to her health? We also don't know if Madonna choose the little girl or this is what the orphanage told Madonna this was her option for adopting. People think you can just choose what ever kid you want in that system but often in overseas adoption they tell potential parents they have a child they can either take or not take. Its not like a store where they walk through and pick which kid they want. Mercy may have very well been assigned to Madonna.

From the huffington post, the agreement between the grandmother and the orphanage was that the child would live at the orphanage until the age of 6, at which point, the grandmother would take the girl to her home. I believe the little girl's parents died while she was in the orphanage. But regardless of the situation, why can't Madonna find a child without any family, and avoid all of this? Fine, with the first adoption, David still had a dad, but now she's repeating this situation again? There's something not right with this woman.

I totally agree with you Mormolok.

No..but there is always hope that maybe some day you will have the resources and then you can raise your child. You have to go there and see with your own eyes how people live. Its totally another world..and you can compare a teenage mother who doesn't want to work and doesn't know what responsibility is with any of those people.
shantejam shantejam 7 years
Well obviously if she doesn't have the resources to raise the grandchild properly as in the U.S. when some teen mother's aren't ready to become parent's because of financial reasons or maturity, they do a selfless act by giving up the child for adoption for a better life.

YOU GUYS HAVE NO SENSE OF REALITY, Africa is not like USA! People struggle to find food and many give their children to the orphanage because they know their children will have something to eat every day. And they get to visit the child from time to time. All they need is resources to raise their children not to take them away! What Madonna is doing is just horrible! Don't think that everybody has the possibilities that you guys have!

I think it's a good thing for little Mercy, living in an orphanage for all her life, and why do these families all of a sudden have something to say when someone is about to adopt these children? Where was the grandmother the last 3 or 4 yrs of Mercy's life living in an orphanage?
superstar2780 superstar2780 7 years
I agree with ilanac, I don't understand why the family wouldn't want a better life for a small child that they obviously cannot care for themselves?
ilanac13 ilanac13 7 years
i don't get why the grandmother has say in this right now. if she wanted the little girl then mercy shouldn't be in an orphanage no? or am i just really confused. that's the same thing with david - it just doesn't make sense to me how you can put your child in an orphanage and then when someone wants to adopt them, it becomes this big deal.
