Katie Holmes Talks About Her Big Life With Tom and Suri in Marie Claire

Katie Holmes played up her green eyes with enhancing violet makeup for the cover of Marie Claire's October issue. The Romantics star has been making the promotional rounds leading up to the release of her film on Friday, and last night she joined her fashionable costars at the NYC premiere. Katie partied into the evening with her thoughtful husband, Tom Cruise, but their daughter Suri missed out on the adults' only affair. Katie, though, told the magazine that she likes to keep Suri on a certain schedule whereever in the world they happens to be, and the actress also shared about being Mrs. Cruise and expanding their family. Here's more:

  • On being Mrs. Cruise: "It's really exciting. Tom's as big at home as he is on the movie screen. He's so passionate about everything, whatever he's doing. When he's being a dad, he's right there;he's giving it his all. It's inspiring and it's fun. It's an amazing life, but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are."
  • On having more children: "Maybe in a couple of years, but right now I want to make sure I'm really there for Suri. I'm the youngest in my family-my closest sister is 5 years older than me, and the next one is nine years ahead of me, so I was a bit of an only child, and I liked it! I liked having all of my mom's attention, and sometimes I think I still do."
  • What she hopes to pass along to Suri: “We travel a lot, and so for me, it’s keeping a daily schedule for Suri that never changes. We wake up, and we do the same thing. She does her chores. I think it’s very important. If she doesn’t get her chores done, I notice she’s not really herself. She has to make her bed, she has to take her dishes to the sink, she has to put her clothes in the laundry — you know, that basic stuff. I try to do what my mom did for me … just spending time with her, making doll clothes and planting in the garden … When Suri comes to the set, we have art projects, and I just try to keep her busy and inspired.”

I'm sorry, I just feel very targeted by your comments -- this is an article about Katie Holmes, if you think that Suri seems spoiled then you could simply say so. There is no need to insult an entire group of people by saying that only children are self-involved. As much as I don't wish to continue this discussion, I will say that the parents' attitude has much more to do with their child's character than whether or not they have siblings. There are egotistical people that have brothers and sisters and giving, generous only children, and vice versa - it's about how you're raised and not about how many siblings you have.

So, Cotedazur, you consider being an only child a privilege, while I consider having siblings a much greater gift in life. And yes, in my experience, most only children who I know as adults are on average a lot more self-oriented and self-involved - which makes a lot sense, since all of their impressionable childhood years were spend in the limelight of their parents attention, and not having to share that attention with a sibling. And just because you're sick of people having a certain opinion, does not preclude them from doing so - or expressing it Once again, someone is protesting way too much.....

You didn't say that you were speaking from your own experience, you said "MOST PEOPLE with only children." I find it hard to believe that you actually know on a personal level most people who have only children. And I am testy, because I am an only child who has LOVED being an only child my entire life and who plans on having only one child with my husband because I hope to give that same privilege to my child. And this is a sentiment that I share with all of my only-child friends, all of whom I find to be more giving and more open than any of our friends with siblings. I am getting tired of all the discussion about how selfish only children are on this site, especially on a thread that is supposed to be about Katie Holmes.

Uh, actually no Cotedazur - I'm speaking from my own experience. Your experience may be different. A bit testy, aren't we?

Uh, ChicagoDiva, I think your statement is totally off base. Could people PLEASE back off only children?

What's sad is that most people that are only children always wish that they had a sibling, and are always a bit more self-involved and self-absorbed than people with siblings. Suri is already exhibiting little princess behavior, and it doesn't seem like Katie has the brains to rein it in.

the light in her eyes is gone. Living as Tom's beard must be very draining.

I don't know, I actually really like her from this article. She sounds like she has her head on straight regarding parenting.

I think she looks great and seems genuinely happy. Tom seems like an odd man, but for her sake (and the sake of their child) I do hope things are as great as she says!!!
