Paying $24.40 for a gallon of milk might sound crazy, but that's how much it would feel like if you were living below the poverty line in the San Francisco Bay Area. One in 10 Bay Area families lives below the poverty line, making $24,300 or less per year. That's one-fifth of the average income in the Bay Area, making basic needs five times harder to afford.

POPSUGAR is proud to be partnering with Tipping Point Community, the leading poverty-fighting organization in the Bay Area, in its first-ever awareness campaign called Poverty Line Prices. The campaign sheds light on what it's like for people too poor to meet their basic needs every time they visit the grocery store.

The video above captures the reactions of shoppers as they purchase groceries with prices inflated by 500 percent. The film was shot at a grocery store in Nob Hill, one of San Francisco's most affluent neighborhoods, where, Zillow estimates, the median rent is $5,242 per month, and the average home price is $1.39 million. Check it out and think about it the next time you head out for a gallon of milk. More information on Tipping Point and Poverty Line Prices can be found here.
