V Gets Double the Starlets With Dakota and Gabourey

February's V Magazine has two covers — one for New Moon's Dakota Fanning and another for Gabourey Sidibe of Precious. The girls are on the cover of the magazine's special size issue, which features a few interesting editorials that tackle the model weight debate. Dakota and Gabourey, though, stuck to chatting about their own work in film. Here's more:

  • Gabourey on paving her own way: "Growing up, there weren’t a lot of actresses and singers who looked like me. There were no real times that I thought maybe I can do it, until Mo’Nique came along. She’s a plus-sized woman who didn’t care about one day being skinny. All my life I’ve been hearing that I’ll never amount to anything until I am skinny. And she disproved everything that everyone has ever told me."
  • Dakota on being a role model: "I think that when you’re in the public eye, you automatically become a role model, because people are reading about you and looking at pictures of stuff you’ve done. But, you know, no one’s perfect, everyone makes mistakes. I have made mistakes and I will make mistakes. I’m only human."
  • Dakota on playing Jane in New Moon: "It's really fun to play evil characters. I'd never done that before, so it was interesting to be mean. My favorite part was the red contact lenses."

ok, ok...we're all entitled to our opinion...the chick from Precious is obese, yes...that's not big boned, that's a health issue...that said, God bless her, hope she goes far and one day gets a little more healthy...Dakota's a cutie, hope she stays away from coke

I think they both look pretty.

P.S., these Eurocentric standards of beauty really need to be publicly drawn and quartered.

So, I want to try to figure this out. Most of the people commenting are upset that they put a fat chick on a cover, but ignore that the skinny, blond, white TEENAGE girl looks like pedophile bait?

Its amazing you have to ability to just look at someone and tell what they are at risk for. I thought several factors determined that including genetics and other environmental and social factors, but I must be wrong. Also, my main point was her message should not be negated because of her size. How is that enabling her? Health isn't just about exercise and diet, it encompasses the emotional and mental. If she is successful at attaining emotional and mental health, maybe the other aspects of health will follow. It is good to love yourself, because that can be a catalyst to achieving physical health as well. You don't need to sound so bitter. And ultimately, none of us knows how early we are going to go to the grave, cause again that is not something that is solely determined by physical health.

finally V magazine decides to put a confident woman of color on the cover. i get sick and tired of white, anorexic models or talentless actresses who just happen to look good in a designer dress. gabourey's message of loving yourself regardless of your size is admirable. i bet this girl has more self-esteem than half the models/actresses who have ever been on the cover of a magazine.

If she chooses to be the way she is, then that is HER choice. Just because she is on a magazine cover doesn't mean that we should all automatically do what she does regarding her health because she is a celebrity. Let her choose her life, and you choose your path. On the topic, I think Dakota looks a little scary on the cover, not gonna lie.

Health is not solely determined by weight. You can't look at someone and determine how healthy they are... If you could, we could all be doctors. People come in all shapes and sizes, levels of health aside, and there is little to no representation of this diversity in the media. It is nice to open up a magazine and see people of ALL sizes. Gabby may be overweight, but why is her message negated or diluted because of this? It is important to love yourself, because loving yourself leads to good health and healthy self esteem. Should she only love herself after she loses 20 lbs?

allthingspop, no one said anything about Dakota being too skinny. And the comments on Gabby's weight are true. Being morbidly obese is very unhealthy. No one is judging her or saying she should be a skinny minny.

One's too fat. The other's too skinny. Is that the only thing people on this site can think about- weight issues? "The Size Issue"? This is sick

The difference between Gabby and Mo'Nique is that Mo'Nique looks reasonably healthy even though she is overweight. Gabby does not.

I get being happy in your skin but if we are going to go after people who are too thin we also need to go after those who are very obese. Unfortunately, Gabby is very obese and needs to lose some weight to be HEALTHY.
dancing-nancy dancing-nancy 6 years
The girl who played Precious is obese which is not healthy. I don't suggest she starve herself skinny but she should lose some weight for her health. Plus she would probably feel better.
