Barack Obama took the stage at the Democratic National Convention this evening for his formal acceptance speech to run for another four years in office. The American people themselves were a big focus of his address, and we have a few of the highlights right here — watch!
Rihanna started tonight's MTV VMAs with a rowdy performance of her new song "Cockiness," and host Kevin Hart was on stage afterward to start the jokes coming. He verged into some potentially awkward territory when he tried to end the feud between Drake and Chris Brown, both of whom went on to win awards later. Kevin even leaped to Kristen Stewart's defense in his opening riff about mistakes. Katy Perry popped up to present the first award, best pop video, to One Direction. One Direction also later claimed best new artist. Robert Pattinson, meanwhile, joined his Twilight buddies Peter Facinelli, Taylor Lautner, and more to debut a new clip from their upcoming Breaking Dawn Part 2.
As for the performances, Miley Cyrus introduced Pink, who put on a boisterous show. Frank Ocean, welcomed by Zoe Saldana, had one of the night's most moving onstage appearances and was followed by Lil Wayne, One Direction, and Green Day. Alica Keys, who took in the fun alongside husband Swizz Beatz and their son Egypt, debuted her new song "Girl on Fire." Taylor Swift also wore her signature red to belt out "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." The final Moonman went to video of the year honoree Rihanna for "We Fell in Love." Robert Pattinson joined his Twilight buddies Taylor Lautner, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser, and Peter Facinelli at this evening's MTV VMAs in LA. Robert introduced an exclusive clip from Breaking Dawn Part 2 and also thanked the fans for their many years of support. They're gearing up for the release of the final film on Nov. 16. One of the series's stars was absent — Kristen Stewart's in Toronto premiering her On the Road. She stepped out with her other castmates Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund, looking gorgeous in a sheer Zuhair Murad gown.
The red carpet at this evening's MTV VMAs was full of stylish musical stars. White was a theme for a few of the ladies, with Taylor Swift donning a J. Mendel pantsuit and Rihanna picking a simple gown to keep the focus on her new haircut. Katy Perry went colorful, as usual, in an Elie Saab creation. Emma Watson also picked up on the bright tones, wearing a mixed print combo from Peter Pilotto. Miley Cyrus had a new take on a black dress in Emilio Pucci, while Zoe Saldana looked gorgeous in a light mini from Salvatore Ferragamo. Emma Watson was a colorful sight in Peter Pilotto on the red carpet at tonight's MTV VMAs in LA. She's on hand to promote her new movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Press for the film also had Emma in NYC recently, where she visited David Letterman's Late Show earlier this week to chat up the coming-of-age film. She had company on the carpet tonight from her big-screen leading man Ezra Miller. Emma's latest picture hits theaters on Sept. 20.
Katy Perry wore Elie Saab on the red carpet at this evening's MTV VMAs in LA. She's up for a couple awards during the show, including video of the year, best female video, and best art direction in a video. Katy didn't get a Moonman just yet, but she was among the night's first presenters. She had the honor of handing off the best pop video honor to One Direction. She seems to be a fan of the British boy band, since she tweeted earlier today, "If One Direction doesn't perform on the VMAs, I am gonna jump of this ledge." Taylor Swift opted for a white pantsuit to make her red-carpet entrance at the VMAs in LA tonight. She'll be taking the stage later this evening to perform her latest hit, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" from her upcoming album Red due out Oct. 22. Taylor isn't up for any Moonmen this year, but we all remember the moment Kanye West stormed the stage during her best female video acceptance speech in 2009. Victoria Beckham donned a bright orange dress to get in on the Fashion's Night Out action in NYC today. She made an appearance at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Midtown for an appearance alongside Vogue's Anna Wintour. Posh is a big supporter of Fashion's Night Out, having made cameos in the past, too. She also popped up in a special Vogue video promotion for the 2012 agenda.
