Sometimes it's not even that they aren't marketable, sometimes it's because the distributor couldn't afford to market it. For instance the Weinstein Company right now is sitting on a bunch of really good films because they were having money problems and decided to throw everything they left into marketing Inglorious Bastards. It was a good gamble for them and hopefully gives them the cash flow to market the rest of the films. The same thing happened to the distributors of The Informant. The problem with not having the cash to market is if they sit on the shelf for too long then it's too late to release to theaters and then they have no choice but to send them straight to DVD in order to fulfill everyone's contract and pay the financiers back their money.

Wow...I may be losing it, but I am intrigued by these now. Especially the ones with the big names (Morgan Freeman, Claire Danes, John Cusak). I'm going to see if Netflix Watch Instantly has some of these for next time I am bored! And I totally agree with both kscincotta and glynisilly!

I also don't think that Man About Town could be any worse than Gigli.

I don't know, Buzz. You seem to be assuming that just bc these movies went straight to DVD, that means they're worse than the stuff that it makes to the theater. I'm not saying these movies are good by any stretch of the imagination, but straight to DVD also means they weren't marketable. I'm still guessing that Love Guru was way worse than Edison Force.
