Avatar Still at No. 1 During a Record-Breaking Holiday Weekend

Box Office: Avatar Is Still Wowing Audiences at No. 1

Thanks to a few film juggernauts, it was a record-breaking weekend at the movies, with the industry taking in an unprecedented $278 million in sales. Leading the pack was reigning champ, Avatar. Despite three big releases breaking into the top five, no one was able to unseat James Cameron's sci-fi spectacle, which brought in $75 million in its second week (that's an incredibly small drop off of only 2.6 percent from last weekend's final gross).

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law gave a strong showing at No. 2 with their Sherlock Holmes raking in $65.3 million and breaking the record for biggest Christmas opening ever. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel followed at No. 3 with $50.2 million. The Meryl Streep comedy It's Complicated earned $22.1 million for fourth place, and finishing out the top five was Up in the Air with $11.7 million.

avatar was DEF amazing in 3D - we saw it last weekend. this weekend we saw Sherlock Holmes AND up in the air. i really enjoyed SH but i'm not surprised that avatar did so well. i feel like a lot of people were holding out in seeing avatar to see how it would do, and maybe some were just making sure that it was suitable for younger viewers and get reviews from friends.

Yah I saw it in 3D Christmas Eve. Blew me the hell away! I had seen it in 2D opening day and it was beautiful then, but in 3D its almost overwhelming
