20 Things That We Need to See in the Gilmore Girls Reboot

It's like the song says: where Gilmore Girls leads, we will follow. As the premiere date of Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life draws closer, fans get more and more excited to return to Stars Hollow. Theories abound as to what will actually happen to our favorite mother/daughter pair, but let's not forget about all the little things that make this show one of a kind. Here are just 20 things that can't be left out of the reboot.

01
A Classically Kitschy Stars Hollow Event

A Classically Kitschy Stars Hollow Event

Anyone familiar with small towns knows that events like festivals, anniversaries, and other celebrations are kind of a big deal — and Stars Hollow is no different. It seems like something new happens in almost every episode (ahem, 24-hour dance competition), and the town just wouldn't be the same without it. Thus, neither would the reboot!

02
Insane Amounts of Coffee
Everett Collection

Insane Amounts of Coffee

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a day in the life of the Gilmore girls has to start with coffee — coffee from Luke's Diner whenever possible. Both Lorelai and Rory imbibe an incredible amount of coffee on the show, so at least one scene on the topic complete with huge mugs has to make it into the reboot.

03
Rory Geeking Out Over a Book
Everett Collection

Rory Geeking Out Over a Book

Rory Gilmore, the girl who brings books on dates. No, really. Remember when she brings a book to the Chilton dance she goes to with Dean? Rory just wouldn't be Rory without a book nearby, so there are bound to be at least a few scenes in the reboot where she's lost in a new page-turner.

04
A Crazy Town Hall Meeting
The CW

A Crazy Town Hall Meeting

If every small-town meeting were as entertaining as the ones in Stars Hollow, they'd probably be turning people away. Scenes at town hall meetings are often the most entertaining part of an episode — it's when the quirkiness of the town (and the townspeople) we all love so much shines through. Let's hope for a town hall meeting in every one of the four installments of the reboot. And speaking of townspeople . . .

05
Good Old Grumpy Luke
Everett Collection

Good Old Grumpy Luke

Luke Danes is many wonderful things: dependable, loyal, and sweet. He's also extremely grumpy, and it doesn't take much to annoy him. From his frustration with Lorelai's coffee addiction to his rage over Taylor Doose opening up a candy store next door to the diner, his rants are legendary. And now with cell phones even more common than when the original series ended, he probably yells at customers in the diner every day about the "no cell phone" rule. Wonder what his thoughts are about Instagram . . .

06
A Taylor Doose Situation
Everett Collection

A Taylor Doose Situation

One of the most iconic (if also most irritating) Stars Hollow regulars is Taylor Doose, owner of the local market and candy store and all-around busybody. He rules the town with an iron gavel and is easy to provoke into a dither, which means he often clashes with other townspeople in ridiculous ways. But Stars Hollow wouldn't be Stars Hollow without him, so it would just seem wrong if we didn't see him walking around in the reboot with those judgy eyebrows.

07
The Latest Gossip From Babette and Miss Patty
Everett Collection

The Latest Gossip From Babette and Miss Patty

If there was ever going to be a Gilmore Girls spinoff, it should be about these two. Babette and Miss Patty are confident, unapologetic, and hilarious, all while stealing every single scene they're in. They especially love getting and spilling dirt about what goes on in the town — Babette finds out about Rory's first kiss from Dean before Lorelai does! It just wouldn't be right not to have a few scenes with them gossiping about the latest happenings in town.

08
Head-Spinning Conversations
The CW

Head-Spinning Conversations

Gilmore Girls moves pretty fast. If you don't pay attention, you could miss it. Literally. This show is known for moving extremely quickly with its dialogue, which is part of what makes it so entertaining. Rory and Lorelai are especially adept at moving conversations along at an insane speed. The show just wouldn't have the same feel if we didn't feel like maybe we should go back and rewatch that scene to make sure we heard everything right.

09
The Snark of Emily Gilmore
Everett Collection

The Snark of Emily Gilmore

While she often clashes with her daughter (and at times her granddaughter), it's easy to see where Lorelai and Rory inherited their biting wit. Emily Gilmore never disappoints when it comes to snark, and she does it while always looking fabulous. When it comes to the reboot, we're sure she's been hit hard by her husband Richard's death, but watching any scene with Emily Gilmore without some classic burns perfectly delivered would simply be wrong.

10
Sookie St. James's Culinary Genius
Everett Collection

Sookie St. James's Culinary Genius

While Sookie often gets herself into sticky situations in her personal life, she's a perfectionist when it comes to her work as a chef — and it clearly pays off. She always seems to be crafting something delicious, whether it's for her job or on her off time. It's part of what makes Sookie a character we love, and we're dying to see what she's whipping up these days.

11
Jackson Getting Too Close With His Produce
The CW

Jackson Getting Too Close With His Produce

The debates between Sookie and Jackson over his produce are where we initially see the fireworks between the two characters and what endear Jackson to us in the first place. The man knows produce and isn't afraid to scream about it in the streets. He's so dedicated to making sure he grows good produce that he SLEEPS NEXT TO THE ZUCCHINI he grows for the opening of the Dragonfly Inn. That's dedication.

12
Michel and Annoying Guests
Everett Collection

Michel and Annoying Guests

For someone employed in the hospitality business, Michel Gerard isn't very hospitable. Sarcastic and haughty to a fault, he's perpetually annoyed by his job, especially the guests. It's always funny to watch him appear "polite" around customers knowing he wishes they would all just go back to where they came from. He's the perfect character to sympathize with on those days when the world just seems to be against you, and the world of Gilmore Girls isn't complete without him.

13
Kirk's . . . Kirk-ness
Everett Collection

Kirk's . . . Kirk-ness

How do you even explain someone like Kirk? He's had just about every job you can have in Stars Hollow, and just when you think he can't get any stranger, he does. He's a good guy at heart, though, and he means well. So what if he interrupted Lorelai and Luke's first kiss with a naked night terror? Could happen to anyone. He's one of those characters who makes Stars Hollow the town we know and love, and it would simply be a crime for a return to Stars Hollow to leave out its most unique resident.

14
Lane and Zach's Parenting Style
Everett Collection

Lane and Zach's Parenting Style

After a string of disappointing relationships, Lane Kim finally finds her soulmate in her bandmate Zach. Theirs is one of the most memorable TV weddings ever, and then they immediately get pregnant — with twins. We don't get to see much of Lane and Zach as parents before the show ended, but we can only assume that they're now raising those boys on classic rock and roll. And with Lane having had such a strict upbringing, it seems only fair that we get to see how she approaches being a mother.

15
Paris vs. the World
Everett Collection

Paris vs. the World

Paris Geller is an iconic Gilmore Girls character in many ways, and her unapologetic (and sometimes obnoxious) pessimism is one of them. Her intense ambition and lack of patience cause her to easily fly into a rage or depression over something that isn't that big of a deal — and often leave Rory to be the one to calm her down. If she's indeed a doctor now like she'd planned, we can only assume she gets frustrated every single day — and we can't be denied a classic Geller flip-out.

16
Friday Night Dinner
Everett Collection

Friday Night Dinner

Ah, Friday night dinner at the Gilmore house: sometimes uneventful, sometimes complete with screaming matches. But it's never boring to watch three generations of Gilmores interact. Since Rory is out of college now, it would appear that she and Lorelai don't have any financial obligation to go anymore, but with the passing of Richard and Emily's inevitable heartbreak, it also seems plausible for Rory and Lorelai to go see Emily at least occasionally to check in with her. Despite all the ups and downs of the mother-daughter-granddaughter dynamic, it's only right that we get to see all three of them at the same table again.

17
A Running Hug
The CW

A Running Hug

It was by no means invented by Gilmore Girls, but a running hug between mother and daughter just seems to symbolize their relationship. There are multiple instances of this embrace throughout the show — one of the most emotional ones happens when Rory and Lorelai finally make up after their fight following Rory's departure from Yale. Seeing the affection between the Gilmore girls themselves is a cornerstone of the show, so we need some more, pronto.

18
The First Snow
Everett Collection

The First Snow

Lorelai Gilmore loves her hometown — it's the exact opposite of the environment she was headed for if she'd stayed with her parents after having Rory. But one of the simple things she loves most is experiencing the first snow. She swears multiple times throughout the show that she can smell it coming before it arrives. Since the reboot will cover all four seasons, we're inevitably going to see Stars Hollow in the snow. It only seems fair for us to experience this magical moment along with Lorelai.

19
The Town Troubadour
The CW

The Town Troubadour

With all the other things that happen on this show, you might even forget he's there every once in a while, but there's no denying the town troubadour is at the heart of what makes Stars Hollow the quaint place we know and love. The series just wouldn't seem right without him there setting the scene with his music.

20
Dinner at Luke's
Everett Collection

Dinner at Luke's

The end of the very first episode of Gilmore Girls is paralleled by the end of the very last — a scene of Rory and Lorelai happily talking while sitting at Luke's, with Luke himself in the background. It's a snapshot of the show at its happiest: the relationship between the girls is healthy and they are at their go-to spot in the town they love, with someone close by who cares about them both. All is right in their world.

Sure, the reboot may not use this exact same scene again for its last shot, but we have to see the Gilmore girls enjoying at least one meal at Luke's — complete with Luke judging them for their orders and then bringing them extra fries/coffee without asking.
