Biggest Surprises at the 2009 Emmy Awards

What Was the Biggest Surprise of the Emmy Awards?

The Emmys started out with a bang last night, and not just because of Neil Patrick Harris's amazing opening number. The first few awards handed out were big shockers, though the end of the night mirrored last year's show when Mad Men and 30 Rock took home the top honors. I was both happy and disappointed with the night's shakeups, but what do you think was the biggest surprise of the Emmys?

I was so happy that Kristin Chenoweth won, I had tears in my eyes during her speech. I was also really happy that Toni Collette, because she does an amazing job on United States of Tara. I still don't understand why 30 Rock continue to win year after year. I think it has its funny moments, but other shows deserve a chance too.

Sarana, I guess you need to watch a few more episodes. It does take a while to get into the characters. When I watch the first episode, I thought it was over-hyped and most boring show. Then things started to get going. Also, the 2nd season has really great bits in it (Alec Balwin as Tracy Jordan's dad is priceless, go watch it on YouTube....Jack, psychiatrist). 3rd season is one of the best TV comedy. Or you would prefer watching 2 1/2 Men instead?

splayer, I was really happy about Michael Emerson winning, too! Bryan Cranston winning is not a surprise at all - he's fantastic on Breaking Bad.

I don't understand the praise for 30 Rock. I bought the first season but turned it off after the first episode, such a bad show.

The only reason I watched was because Neil Patrick Harris was hosting. He was fantastic. It was a very good choice for host by the Emmy organizers. I am very happy that Toni Collette won. She absolutely deserved it.

xinunus -- Thank goodness these awards are not handed out based on ratings. The awards are actually about quality (usually, sorry John Cryer...), not how many people are watching. That's called the People's Choice Awards.

I have always liked Cherry and was glad that she won. I wasnt surprised that NPH did a great job, I figured he would. I was bummed that Jon Hamm didnt win. I would have liked to have seen him get recognized

So happy that Cherry Jones won. As a fellow Carnegie Mellon alum, it's always excited when alumni receive recognition like this. I'm also really happy that Michael Emerson finally won an Emmy for Lost. Ben Linus is one of the most complex characters on tv, and Emerson is outstanding in the role.

NPH indeed made the show funny, but still the funniest moment was Ricky Gervais.

So happy Kristin won! I also enjoyed the color commentary, it made me not want to fast forward people walking up to the podium. Also hearing about the obscure roles the presenters had before they were famous. Fun.
