Up Soars at the Box Office

Pixar's Up had a great weekend at the box office, coming in at No. 1 with a whopping $68.2 million. That makes Up the third biggest Pixar debut ever (out of ten) behind The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. It's also worth noting that Up's debut bested Wall-E, which opened last year to $63.1 million.

Interestingly, this particular box office win "validates Disney’s decision to let its Pixar unit put creativity before commerce. Some Wall Street analysts . . . had predicted the film would have a difficult time attracting children because of its geriatric action hero." Hurray for putting story first!

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian continued to do well and scored second place over the weekend. Drag Me to Hell debuted at No. 3 followed by Terminator Salvation and Star Trek.

Love this movie too! Hurray for putting the story first, indeed.

I liked it! It was violently cute [seriously, was anyone else disturbed by the guy falling to his doom in a kid's movie?]. The 3D took some getting used to.I'm not entirely convinced Pixar knows how to make a -bad- movie.

With the success of this and Wall-E, I hope Pixar never again has to justify putting the story first.

I really liked this movie too. I cried a little, so did my six year old. One of the better pixar movies, though they are all great.

I love that Pixar movies have such heart and the plots always give you something deeper than what it appears to be on the surface.

I really love how Pixar make movies on the predicate that people are, in fact, intelligent enough to watch intelligent movies and that they don't have to dumb down the story or make it evolve around "beautiful people" to appeal to the audience.

I'm so upset my fiance and I went yesterday to take my daughter on a date and it was so packed, the showings for the afternoon were all full and there is no way I would take to a showing after 5:30 PM due to school the next day, oh well maybe next weekend.
