Buzz In: Which TV Shows Have the Best Music?

From scoring an entire episode with songs from New York band The Virgins to featuring an a capella version of Fergie's "Glamorous," Gossip Girl has certainly done its part to bring good music to television this year. That's probably not a huge surprise, though: Its music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, has brought memorable songs to shows like The OC and Grey's Anatomy as well.

As I was reading a recent interview with Patsavas, I started thinking about what makes a good TV soundtrack. The shows Patsavas has worked on seem to have that secret down when it comes to catchy indie and rock songs — but Cold Case uses music in a completely different way that's still very cool, and the instrumental songs Explosions in the Sky contribute to the Friday Night Lights soundtrack do a lot to establish that show's mood.

Which TV shows do you think use music in the best ways? And which shows that haven't released soundtracks do you wish would?

I agree with you, Happsmjc, Dawson's Creek was so great at doing the whole make the music be apart of the scene. I think they were one of the first show's I noticed doing this. I love DC. Kind of sad you didn't much like October Road though, but to each is there own! I even have some of DC's music on my player at myspace, I love when I song takes you straight back to what the scene was at the time. Tootle Pip, MK

Grey's for me, and I echo the comment that Alexandra Patsavas is a genius, I think she's got the best job ever! I think her best pick was Kate Havnevik, her album is awesome!

I agree, October Road does have great music--I didn't really love the show but I loved the music so thats why I kept watching! Also, I totally forgot Dawson's Creek--it is def. one of the shows that really started to feature music, and had so many classic songs in it.

Grey's does an awesome job at pairing the song with the right moment. I have all three soundtracks and will likely purchase the 4th one when it comes out. I have discovered to many new artist thanks to that show.

Scrubs definately has the best, but Grey's and the OC are both good choices. Pretty much every show on the CW is good about using current music since it is a form of product placement (that is less annoying).

ABC's October Road, has by far the best music out there. I mean the music on this show is a character in it's self. With out the music in the episode of Season 2's "Spelling it out" where Eddie and Janet finally sleep together, that scene would not have been half as fun to watch. They played the Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night" then Geoff Stults dances and takes his shirt off, come on who doesn't luv that. And in season two one of the most touching episodes October Road ever did this year was the episode called "Stand by me alone". This is the best example of October Road's music being a character on the show too. They used Skid Row's "I remember you" as a key plot line. October Road's music is so great that ABC could of put out a sound track and made some big time money. I love the music on this show. Grey's has been one that has helped a lot of new artists, too. MK

Grey's - I don't even watch it and I own all the soundtracks. That, and The O.C. - only because they featured Rooney, who I loved even before that episode...

The O.C. for me definitely had like the best soundtracks ever. I loved how they used the songs not only to set a tone but to help the episodes tell a story. They totally revived Hallelujah and I will always remember the use oh Hide and Seek in the season 2 finale. They also helped me discover Rooney in an absolutely hilarious episode. And as for Gossip Girl since some of the same people that worked on the O.C. work on it, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, its no wonder the music is great. How about when they played the Filthy Youth (Ed Westwick's band), that was great.

...no one's gonna say Ugly Betty? Seriously? Come ON, remember the X-Mas Party at the office? Or how about that gorgeous piano tune they play when someone has a sad moment? Ugly Betty's soundtrack rules.

Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, and Gossip Girl have the best music. Most of the music in Grey's Anatomy is pretty good, but the majority of the songs are depressing and are only good to listen to in certain scenes. I wouldn't necessarily listen to that type of music in my car with the speakers blaring or dancing down the street lol.

Love this question. On my iPod, almost all of my playlists are names of TV shows (featuring, of course, songs heard on those shows). Several of my favorite singers/groups are singers/groups that I heard for the first time on TV. I recommend the following: Foy Vance (Grey's); Brandi Carlile (Grey's); Jose Gonzales (OTH, B&S); The National (OTH, B&S); Regina Spektor (VM); etc.

The OC, One Tree Hill & Grey's Anatomy. There are a couple of Gossip Girl ones, but most of them are just quite MEH.

the o.c. has to be my favorite ever, one tree hill is up there as well and greys anatomy is awesome as well. and even though it has been off the air for a few years, dawsons creek had some great music that reminds me of my high school years.

I can always tell if I really enjoy how they use music on a show if I take the time to make my own "soundtrack" for the show. Which I've done for GG, Veronica Mars, Angel, Buffy and House. Those old WB show kind of started the music montage trend (I think) and on all of them they always managed to showcase indie bands or find just the right track to devestate me just a little bit more (Sarah McLachlan in the Buffy Season 2 finale anyone? Slayed me...pun intended)

As for actual original scores, I think LOST has the most beautiful music, but for soundtrack, I have to say One Tree Hill and The OC!
