"Desperate Housewives" Recap: Episode 23, "Getting Married Today"

"Desperate Housewives" Recap: Episode 23, "Getting Married Today"

Wow, what an episode! Things were getting a little out of whack on "Desperate Housewives," but this week several steps were taken to make things right, including one really bold (but sad) move at the end when we finally learn who will not be returning next season. We also see the long-awaited return of Bree, get a glimpse of Victor's true intentions with Gaby, meet Lynette's mom and watch Susan give Mike a huge surprise. Dare I say last night's season finale was reminiscent of "Desperate Housewives" Season One glory?

To read the details,

The season finale kicks off with Bree showing up at Gaby and Victor's wedding very noticeably pregnant! Her friends (and we) are shocked, though no one seems to notice that she's being very vague about her due date. We discover later that Bree herself is not pregnant, but is pretending to be pregnant so that when her daughter Danielle's illegitimate baby is born in the fall, Bree can pass it off as her own. And poor Danielle is being held hostage by nuns. I must say it's really nice to have Bree and her craziness back in the mix.

Early in the episode we learn that Lynette has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, though she has yet to tell her friends on Wisteria Lane. Her estranged mother then shows up uninvited and plans to help take care of the kids while Lynette is undergoing chemotherapy. Lynette protests, but Tom insists they let her stay because she is also going to loan them the $10K they need for Lynette's treatment. Tom tells Lynette that letting her mother help is her penance for Rick (The Sexy Sous Chef).

What?! This is the one part I hated about the episode: Lynette's supposed to forget about 18-plus years of abusive parenting because she's had a crush for a couple weeks? That hardly seems fair. While I'm sure things are not easy for Tom, it's not like Lynette chose to have feelings for Rick, while her mother had a choice when she was treating her kids terribly as they grew up. And hello? Lynette has cancer. This doesn't seem like the time to harp on making her "do penance" for having developed feelings for another man. Am I alone in thinking this episode was extremely harsh on Lynette?

Anyway, Susan is happily planning the most overboard wedding ever and poor Mike is working 24 hours a day to ensure that Susan gets everything she wants for her big day. When Susan finds Mike asleep in the middle of Gaby's wedding reception she realizes that she can't put him through this any longer and quickly arranges a surprise wedding for that night! Susan and Julie trick Mike in to showing up for a private midnight ceremony under the stars. I am so happy to finally see these two end up together even if only because Susan's romantic trials and tribulations were becoming a bit tiresome.

Speaking of weddings, soon before her own big day, Gaby learns that Victor has aspirations to become governor! Gaby says she will not stand for it, and Victor shoots back that he always said he would never let a "stupid woman" stand in the way of his career. Gaby calls off the wedding and storms out. Early the next morning Victor convinces Gaby to change her mind, and the wedding happens as planned. Shortly after the ceremony, however, Gaby overhears Victor's father saying that with Gaby as his wife they are sure to win the Latino vote in his race for governor. Ah ha, finally Victor's true intentions are revealed!

Realizing she has just made a huge mistake, Gaby ducks into a quiet room only to find Carlos drowning his sorrows over his fight with Edie (more on that later) in champagne. Carlos is wondering how his life got so messed up when Gaby suddenly leans over and starts kissing him madly. Yay!

But then it all gets really sad. Carlos discovers that Edie is still on the pill and is not trying to have a baby with him after all. And if I may interject, how dare Carlos get all high and mighty about Edie's deception?! He messed with Gaby's pills and made her get pregnant against her wishes, like a horrible, sneaky snake. Anyway, Carlos tells her he wants nothing to do with her ever again. Convinced she is going to end up old and alone like her mother (who Edie apparently used to talk to during make-out sessions), it appears that Edie hangs herself at the end of the episode. This is incredibly sad, but I must say overall I thought this was one of the best season finales I've seen yet.

Nooo! I hope Edie isn't dead... She's a hilarious character... Couldn't they hav off'ed Susan instead?

For a season finale I really thought there would be more cliffhangers. Edie's last scene was the only thing that got me to gasp! Susan bugs me so much! So any story line with her causes a wrinkle on my nose and my lip to curl. I was disappointed that Gaby went through with the wedding. Although she looked so gorgeous that I cannot wait to see her real-life dress:D The Lynette/Tom/Rick thing is also getting on my nerves. She didn't do anything! Plus her mother does not get to lecture her!! And Bree faking a pregnancy so she can raise her grandchild as her own. Hello? It's a bit 1942 isn't it? Plus you would think she would learn her lesson that sending her kids away does not solve anything. Remember she sent Andrew to boot camp when he came out. Lastly I totally agree with Buzzsugar - Carlos had no right to be pissed with Edie when he got Gabby pregnant on purpose.

I did not find very realistic that Gaby stood quiet when she heard Victor's real intentions... common! I would had jump swearing and everything and had asked for an annulation.... but that's why I don't have my own show. LOL

Since the show's narrator is dead, I'm not convinced we've seen or heard the last of Edie, even if she really did kill herself. At least I hope not...the development of her character this year was too good for her to be off the show completely.

Buzz, I agree: this episode WAS extremely harsh on Lynette! I was thinking the same thing. The "penance" thing bugged me. I forgot about Carlos messing with Gaby's BC pills back in the day, so that makes me feel even worse for Edie. When it was over, I couldn't believe she really hung herself. Did that really happen? I'm not convinced yet. Overall, great season finale. Better than the other shows I have seen..

That was an awesome season finale. I am so glad that Susan & Mike finally got married, and I hope Gabrielle & Carlos get back together. Bree's pretend pregnancy was an interesting twist.

Buzzsugar, brilliant point about Carlos's contraceptive catch-22, what a hypocrite! Don't agree about Lynette though. Having a bad relationship with your mom is a strain you cant get away from, and the sign of a good love is helping people do hard things to better themselves. That is what Tom is doing with Lynette by helping her to forgive her mom and move on. It is a sign that he really loves her because its such an unselfish request, not like demanding that she hire an ugly old lady sous chef next time or something. Other than that, agree that this finale simmered of season's one's sly twists and pleasant sappiness. I admit to getting a little teary when Mike said he'd never seen Susan look more beautiful, especially knowing all the drama with their first proposal and her crying in the twinkly light trailer and everything. As for Gabby, agree that she has been weirdly demure around Victor, in this episode and when he reprimanded her for telling off the parking cop. I like her better when she's an unrepentent. I hope her and Carlos get back together. I enjoy their spicy Latino lovin'. Last but not least, it makes me sad but I do think Edie is dead and will stay that way. I don't want her to be, but I think the show is trying to preserve its macabre element. I wish they would realize what we want is more mystery, not just a body count. Oh well, great episode!

I found the Bree storyline amusing. Even though Lynette's mother wasn't such a great mother, she is trying to make it up. I thought it was extremely nice of her to stick with Lynette through the chemo. I was hoping Gaby didn't marry Victor but she did. She belongs with Carlos.

Referring to your comment, ddene5713, about Lynette's treatment- she mentioned that she has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which is actually a very treatable cancer. I know a friend who has Hodgkin's, and he only recieved 3 treatments. 3 months is a very likely treatment time. Just FYI!

Ok, really enjoyed the episode. So glad to see Bree's crazy a** and her clan.I don't believe Edie will die, i think someone will rush in and discover her and save her.Oh and i'm disapointed with the way they've rushed Lynette into a whole new set of drama without fully exploring the Rick fiasco.I thought we were seeing a whole new side to Lynette and now all of a suddon she's got cancer and a mother who was abusive? Hmm, seems to me it would have been more intresting to see her and Rick. But, whatever.

[sorry for all the comments] sofi...I don't think she used the scarf that was around her neck to hang herself b/c remember she threw it away from her and it was airborne... So I'm sure she used a rope or telephone wire.
ddene5713 ddene5713 8 years
ya...pinups...that's why I was confused... b/c I could have sworn they sent her away to have it then they'd give it away! Hm. :/ Guess they changed their mind? haha.

OOOOH ya. I did remember how Danielle got pregnant but I wasn't aware that Bree was going to raise it as her own!! Gotchya. Thanks for clearing THAT part up for me!

Penny has always been on the show. She's just bigger than she used to be. In the first season she was under one, but that was, what, three years ago? I was SHOCKED that Edie ended up doing that! And I don't know that Lynette has to forgive her mom, but she could accept her help when she very obviously needs it. I am so excited for the fall premiere! :woohoo: I know it's a long time to wait, but I'm already looking forward to it. I wonder what's going to happen with Gaby and Carlos. Is she going to stay married and just take up with him again? Or will he run when he finds out about Edie? Or will that bring them closer? Ooooh.... JUICY.

Will somebody please explain to me why Lynette suddenly has, like, 5 kids? I know one of the girls is Tom's kid with his hs gf(?), but who is 'penny'?

I agree. Why did Bree fake a baby? I thought they were going to adopt it out?

I really enjoyed this episode, too. Buzzsugar, I agree that asking Lynette to forgive her mom may be going to far, but given the circumstance, she can't really afford to push her out, either. $10k for the insurance deductible, plus 5 kids and a husband running his own business? She needs extra hands around and no matter how vile her mother was in the past, she needs to accept help. Lynette is THE strongest woman on the show, and we haven't had the chance to see her weaknesses very often (except that time she was hooked on Ridalin, which was a great storyline). I'm excited to see Lynette come to terms with her childhood and how her cancer will affect the storyline.

That was a great season finale! Do you really think Edie is dead???

I don't think Edie will actually "die* either..I just can't believe she's actually developing a conscious.

Pretty good episode. I dont buy the whole suicide thing. Edie is too vain for that desperate of a measure. Although she is into the drama...

hey ddene, bree faked her pregnancy because her daughter is actually pregnant with a child (the father being Edie's nephew) and Bree plans to pretend that her daughter's child is actually her's. That's why Orson says "I'l lraise the baby as my own." kinda confusing ^^ anyways, I must say that was an incredible season finale. But why must so many people die in this show?! It's like the writers couldn't think of anything better so they simply kill them. I swear there will be no characters left on that show by the end! :S

Bree is going to raise her daughters baby- remember she got pregnant by Edie's nephew. she has her daughter stashed away somewhere (is saying she is in 'boarding school') until she has the baby and give it to Bree and Orson to raise as their own. Like that is going to fly. Edie used a pretty flimsy scarf to hang herself- doubt she'll be dead. Tragic though.
kendalheart kendalheart 8 years
THe baby you are referring to ddene5713, is actually her daughters baby that they sent away so that when she returns from "boarding school" she will look normal again and Bree and Orsen will raise it as theirs... I really liked this eppy..I loved how they brought Bree back..she was def missed! Susan, god why cant she be the one to move away or something so that she can be off of the show? I am way over her! Gabby found out he was a sneaky snake which they hinted to BUT i dont think they stayed true to her character as one who stands up for herself and is a firecracker. Because she just got sad and didnt say anything..yes i know it broke her heart but still. Lynette..that part was a bit distracting for me. All of sudden boom cancer and then her mom, i felt badly for her character! Overall, the best it has been in a very long time!! Gives me faith for next season...maybe
