Ellen DeGeneres Quits American Idol 2010-07-29 17:33:06

Ellen DeGeneres Quits American Idol — Are You Surprised?

Well here's something I didn't see coming — while the industry is buzzing with rumors about who may take Simon Cowell's place on American Idol, Ellen DeGeneres has bowed out of judging duties after only one season. She released the following statement:

"I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be."

I have to admit that I didn't think Ellen brought a ton to the judges table, but with her five-year contract, I didn't expect to see her drop out. Not to mention that she doesn't exactly seem like the quitting type, though it might be beneficial for the show to go back to three judges. Are you surprised to hear this news?

i really love ellen as well. but i agree that her critiques weren't the best on idol, and she wasn't a good fit. i think this is a good decision for her, and she'll continue to have success elsewhere

Meh, American Idol is over as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't bother to watch this year, the contestants were all so boring. Why don't they just call it quits already? The only Idol winner who's had any lasting success is Kelly Clarkson.

No...it was odd having her in the first place....and i heard the other one was fired lol...I couldn't tolerate her and I really think they need to wrap this nonsense show up already

I'm surprised yes - but that doesn't have to do with me thinking if she brought anything to the show or not.

I'm not at all surprised. I love Ellen, but when they picked her, I had kind of a wtf moment. It's just so random, a daytime talk show host on a musical competition? I agree with whoever said the show's done. Now that two of the original judges are gone, it's just not the same. They should cancel it while it's still popular and leave on a high note.

i'm not surprised she quit/got fired, but i do kind of like the idea of regular, non musical person being a judge. b/c ultimately that is who is listening to and buying the music.

I agree rossy! The addition of her was so odd. It's hard to take her and any of her critiques seriously anyway.. and now that Simon is gone, the show will definitely never be the same. I may watch the next season and give it chance depending on who they bring to the show. It will be different, but it might not be "bad".Maybe Simon might rethink his decision now that Ellen is signing off?... ok, I am just hoping.

Sometimes it comes down to 1 simple thing - compatibility. She didn't fit the style of AI & always looked so uncomfortable. Paula & Simon did. No one I know is going to watch now that both are gone.-Ellen is great on her show because it's tailor-made FOR her - her style & personality... No one does it like Ellen.

I think they fired her.Nigel says he wants to revamp the show.Kara's contract isn't even signed yet.I bet they are getting all new judges,They really only need 1.I don't think they need 4 opinions. It's the fans voting so why do they need so many.
