There Are 23 First-Time Emmy Nominees This Year
Earning an Emmy nomination must feel wonderful, but earning your first Emmy nomination? Well, that has to be priceless. This year's Emmy nominations spread the love to tons of people who had never been nominated, including American Horror Story: Freak Show's Finn Wittrock, Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany, and Black-ish's Anthony Anderson. Take a look below to see who is toasting their first-ever Emmy nomination, and mark your calendar for the ceremony on Sept. 20! Disclaimer: While it's very exciting that Amy Schumer has been nominated for Inside Amy Schumer, it's actually not her first nomination; she was nominated last year for her writing on the show.
Viola Davis
Outstanding actress in a drama nominee Davis has been nominated for two Oscars and three Golden Globes for The Help and Doubt, but this is her first time being nominated for an Emmy. Let's hope she takes it home for How to Get Away With Murder!
Anthony Anderson
Black-ish was a big hit in its freshman year, and it's refreshing to see Anderson score his first nod for outstanding actor in a comedy for his role.
Tituss Burgess
Outstanding supporting actor for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is Burgess's first nomination. Titus Andromedon would be so proud.
Michael Kelly
While House of Cards has cleaned up with nominations since season one, this is Kelly's first time being nominated. He's competing for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for his role as Doug Stamper.
David Oyelowo
Oyelowo, best known for his critically lauded work in Selma and The Butler, scored his first Emmy nod for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for Nightingale.
Timothy Hutton
Hutton won an Oscar for his work in 1981's Ordinary People, but this is his first time being nominated for an Emmy. He's up for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie on ABC's American Crime.
Niecy Nash
It's hard to believe that after years on Reno 911!, Nash was just nominated for the first time for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for Getting On.
Zoe Kazan
Olive Kitteridge's Kazan scored her first nod in the outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie category.
Adrien Brody
Brody might actually get an Emmy to put beside his Academy Award, which he won for The Pianist in 2002. He's nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for Houdini.
Rachel Brosnahan
Brosnahan is another first-time nominee from House of Cards. She's up for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her performance as Rachel Posner.
Pablo Schreiber
Despite being on The Wire, Schreiber never actually received any Emmy nods. This time, he's up for outstanding guest actor in a drama series for season two of Orange Is the New Black.
Tatiana Maslany
Rejoice! Maslany has finally scored a nod for playing multiple roles on Orphan Black. Sadly, if she does end up winning outstanding lead actress in a drama series, she won't get a trophy for each of the clones.
Richard Jenkins
Jenkins seems like he's been in everything — except on an Emmy nominations list. This year marks his first nomination, for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for Olive Kitteridge.
Ben Mendelsohn
Mendelsohn scored his first nod for playing the creepiest brother ever on Netflix's Bloodline. He'll be competing for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.
Khandi Alexander
While Alexander is in multiple-nominee Bessie, it's her guest actress spot on Scandal that earned her her first nod.
Mo'Nique
Meanwhile, Mo'Nique (who has an Oscar for 2009's Precious) has been nominated for her supporting actress role in Bessie.
Gaby Hoffmann
Hoffman actually got her first two nods this year: one for supporting actress in a comedy series for Transparent and another for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series in Girls.
Regina King
American Crime's King has been nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie. This is her first nomination, despite several years on the cop drama Southland.
Michael K. Williams
How Williams evaded nomination for The Wire or Boardwalk Empire is a mystery, but at least he'll get a shot for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie for Bessie.
Finn Wittrock
Wittrock earned an Emmy nomination for his terrifying role as Dandy on American Horror Story: Freak Show. He'll be competing in the outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie category.
Richard Cabral
Cabral earned his first major nomination for anything with his Emmy nod for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie for his role on American Crime.
F. Murray Abraham
Abraham, who you may recognize from The Grand Budapest Hotel, won an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 1985 for Amadeus. However, outstanding guest actor in a drama series for Homeland is his first Emmy nod.
Mark Rylance
Rylance has been nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie for Wolf Hall. This role also earned him a Critics' Choice TV Award nomination.
