Simon Cowell calls Britney Spears mean and Mariah Carey officially joins American Idol. Hi, I'm Shannon Vestal. I'm Becky Kirsch. In this episode of The Buzz, we're breaking down those headlines plus more from Fox. We're in Beverly Hills for the Television Critics Association where the networks preview their upcoming shows. And we kicked off the event with Fox. The big news was definitely that Mariah Carey is joining American Idol. Absolutely. You know, those rumors had been swirling for a while, so we all kind of expected it, but it was still really cool to get the first official statement straight from the president of Fox and straight from Mariah herself because he actually picked up the phone and called her while all the reporters sat there watching and, you know, he was saying, "I hope it doesn't go straight to voice mail," but then we heard her voice and she was talking about how excited she was. It wasn't as good as having her there, but it was still pretty exciting. Yeah. And, well, speaking of being excited, I'm so excited to see her on the show as a judge because she will be replacing J-Lo and even though Jennifer Lopez was known for being sweet, I think that Mariah's gonna bring some sass. And the fact that she's one of the most talented the singers in the world, I think she knows what she's talking about. So I'm open to her. I think she's going to have a lot of credibility as a judge. I can't wait to see her. I would love to see her critiquing people singing her songs, like when I tried to hit those upper registers. I was like, how is she going to react to it, this is going to be priceless. Oh yeah, yeah, they're not going to be able to do it. Come on. Well, another big celebrity judge that we've been curious about is Britney Spears, who's of course joining The X-Factor with Simon Cowell. So we get to see a panel of them today. It was Simon, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, and L.A. Reid. They weren't physically in the room. It was a satellite call. But it was still really cool to hear Britney talk about what kind of a judge she is. And we got to see a lot of footage from the auditions. And I feel like people have been teasing that Britney as, you know, that she's critical, that she can be mean and we did get to see a little bit of that. You can't destroy that song, sweetie. Yeah I think that was what was really exciting for me, you know, Simon was saying she's about as sweet as a lemon, and saying that she was mean and all that stuff, but it was cool to see her giving that type of feedback from clips of the show, because, you know, you see pictures, and you hear things, but it's not the same as actually getting the proof that's in the pudding, so I am looking forward to, hopefully, seeing a little edgier side of Britney this fall. Yeah, she's got a lot of personality, but the thing that I was actually really enjoying was the chemistry between Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell. They were bantering like crazy. She calls him old, he was calling her a brat. I think that's gonna be a really fun one to watch when the X Factor comes back. Yeah, for sure. That's what I miss so much about American Idol. So maybe for that third seat, they need to find someone that can kind of have that banter with Mariah Carey. Totally . Well it wasn't all about reality shows at Fox this day. There was also a scripted series we're really excited about which is the Mindy Project. This is starring Mindy Kaling, written by Mindy Kaling. She's from The Office, and I think we've both been fans of hers for a long time, and I was looking forward to this panel so much because this was one of my favorite pilots of this season. I thought it's funny. It's, you know, Mindy Kaling playing kind of a hapless single gal. But it 's definitely pretty edgy. Do you want to hang out? You're hanging out. Let's hang out deep. Oh, god. Well, I'm excited to being paired with New Girl 'cause it sounds like they're kind oftrained comedy wise. And she was actually talking about how her show has a lot of dude energy, which is one of the things I love so much about New Girl, and also unexpected because the show is about a woman, obviously. And also the show has a really awesome cast, like a big cast, like the whole panel, they were all up there. And it's a lot of familiar faces, not necessarily people who are super famous but I think that's gonna be exciting to see them all work together, especially since they were all gushing about Mindy and saying what a great leader she is. Yeah, I think that's gonna be an awesome Tuesday night lineup. The New Girl. New Girl and the Mindy project I think. Put that on your DVR. Mark your calendars. Exactly. Yeah. Great. Thank you. Welcome. That's it from Fox. Keep checking back for more news rom the other networks. I'm Shannon Vestal. I'm Becky Kirsch and thanks for watching The Buzz.
