Heath Ledger Wins Best Supoprting Actor at 2009 Oscars

What Do You Think About the Best Supporting Actor?

Following touching words from Kevin Kline about his performance as the Joker and his acting legacy, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight. He was up against Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Michael Shannon. Do you agree with this win?

Dark Knight is much more than "a superhero movie", its was robbed of many nominations. I'm glad at least Ledger's family received his deserved Oscar.

i also agree, while he did a phenomenal job on the dark knight, im not entirely sure if he would win is he were alive. but im glad he won it, its a fitting tribute to a wonderful actor who died all too early

I think that, had he not died, he would have still been nominated. Maybe he wouldn't have won though. Dark Knight as a movie didn't just get nominated in this category so clearly it isn't being considered just another comic book movie. Heath Ledger's acting as the Joker was incredible and the movie would have been nothing without him. I agree that Brokeback Mountain was good but being able to play a deranged, scarred and frightening villain in clown makeup so well is more impressive in my opinion. I don't know, I like to believe that either way, he would have been nominated. His talent was incredible.

I kind of agree with HaterTot here. I don't think Heath Ledger would have won the Oscar had he still been alive. On the other hand, he did an amazing job with the Joker character and in my opinion, he would have at least been nominated. Then again, what troubles me a little is that I don't know for sure how "objective" the jury was and I wonder if their judgement wasn't clouded by the fact that Ledger died so young and in a such dramatic manner (kind of like a repeat of James Dean who, by the way, didn't win an Oscar in spite of his TWO posthumous acting nominations) !

Kristen, I didn't say anything about whether it was deserved or not, or about any other nominees. All I said is that the Academy isn't known for throwing noms at comic book movies. They toss an occasional bone to actors they respect in comedies, but it is very, very rare and the facts don't bear out a Ledger nom had he still been around. Downey is a multi GG winner and a former Academy nominee and a favorite of his colleagues. I'd guess the next time he's nominated, no matter what for, he wins. But, tell me when the last time a comic book movie was nominated for any of the big 8 awards?

His performance in Brokeback was phenomenal and for me that will be the film I will remember him for. He should have won the award that year! This was a great performance as well and one of my favorite of the year and we all knew he was going to win.

His family seemed snooty? uhhh they were receiving for their very talented loved one who met an untimely end... they weren't snooty, they were stoic.

Hatertot, your name is fitting. I guess RDJ can be nominated for a dumb comedy, but a comic book movie actor can't be? What kind of logic is that?

I'm not surprised by it.

you gotta LOVE Kevin Kline (I do anyway).... this was quite a moving moment and I thought Heath was really really good in this role

I disagree. Heath's performance was amazing and I believe he thoroughly deserved this award. Such a shame he isn't here to accept it :(

If he didn't die, he wouldn't have even been nominated. Not that his performance wasn't great, but no one would have paid attention to "another comic book movie."

Everyone knew he was going to get it (which pissed me off a little because his family seemed a bit snooty walking up there) but everyone in this category was amazing!

I knew he was going to get it, but his performance in Brokeback was WAY better than his performance in The Dark Knight... and he wasn't the "best" this year, although he was good...
