"Heroes" Recap: Episode 23, "How to Stop an Exploding Man"

"Heroes" Recap: Episode 23, "How to Stop an Exploding Man"

According to Mohinder's voiceover at the end of the season finale of "Heroes," "We find purpose in each other — our shared experience of the fantastic...and the mundane." I think he is speaking specifically about the season finale. Mundane, indeed. I'm not utterly disappointed, but I'm not wowed or entirely satisfied either. I'm just going to say it: I think the "Desperate Housewives" season finale was actually better than the "Heroes" finale. Maybe my expectations were too high. Anyway, to check out my lists of likes and dislikes from the episode (spoiler warning) and to tell me what you thought of the "Heroes" finale,

Here are some of the things I liked about the episode:

  • Perhaps my favorite part is when Claire just up and dives out the window, falls many stories, then dusts herself off and walks away. It would have been funny if she'd flipped off her dad and grandma as she sauntered away.
  • The tender moments between Hiro and his father are often touching, but were especially so in this episode when his father tells Hiro not to forget his legacy, "the wind at the back of history."
  • This was awesome: When Sylar has Ando by the throat and taunts Hiro, "All you have to do is stop time before I cut open his head. Think you can do your little trick before I can do mine?" And Hiro zooms through space and time to rescue his friend.
  • Simone's dad could see Future Invisible Peter! That part was the sweetest: "There has to be one who’s good, there always has, and your heart has the ability to love unconditionally. Like I told you, in the end all that really matters is love."
  • Mohinder and Molly, still tugging at my heart strings. Although, when she tells Parkman not to die because he's her hero I had to wonder, "What's Mohinder, chopped liver?"
  • Speaking of Molly, she can be one creepy little girl. "When I think about him," whispering, "he can see me."
  • I love that Grandma Petrelli, Peter and Claire have these serious conversations with Mr. Bennet using Claire's pink cotton candy-colored cell phone.

Here's what I didn't like:

  • Frankly, I wanted Claire to shoot Peter, and not just because I can't stand Peter (or Milo's School of Keanu Reeves acting technique). It would have been a bold, intense move and what do they do instead? Peter and Nathan zoom into outer space together! For a season finale, I just think that was silly. I expected something more from "Heroes."
  • I definitely did not want Mr. Bennet to die, but when he revealed that his name is Noah, I was sure that was the end of our beloved HRG. Then... nothing. So why was his name such a secret this whole time?
  • Having acquired Nathan's flying ability, it seems like Peter could have zipped up to outer space on his own. If we're supposed to just assume that Peter was too heated up or that Nathan could get him there faster, I think that's lame and would have liked to have had that explained fully. Otherwise, to me it seems like an oversight.
  • We never learned Grandma Petrelli's power! We pointlessly learn Mr. Bennet's name but not Grandma P's ability? I understand leaving some mysteries unsolved, but that one seemed like an easy and satisfying bone to throw us.

The ending was good. I wanted more of those "Matrix" action between Peter and Sylar that happened a few episodes before. Simone's dad gave a touching line... "all you need is love" sounds so much like a Beatles song. :) I was happy to see at least one family reunited. Nicki, Micah and DL. I hope DL is not dead. And how come the ambulance didnt wheel him away? Is it cos he's a wanted con? The man Molly was talking about... could it be Peter and Nathan's dad?? Mr Petrelli who is apparently not quiet dead? I read somewhere that he's said to be very powerful... Lets wait and see...

am I the only one happy with this episode??? for me it answers a lot, almost everything that was supposed to be answer this season. The real great episodes weren't seasons finales so... the episodes homecoming, company man, .07% and the graphic novels give a lot of answers and fights... they are not the X-men to put the great hero fight cartoon style. And everybody fights in one way or another in the season finale, so, for me, it covers what a season finale should cover. And has a big cliffhanger, for me, who's dead and who's not. So... let the saga continues.

I agree with you all...this episode wasn't my cup of tea. All the other episodes were better than this one and isin't it suppossed to be the other way around?

My Tivo didn't record Monday, so I had to wait until Friday to catch it again on SciFi. It was a bit...lacking. But at least there were a few decent tie-ins with season two to keep me interested. I need to read the graphic novels...so I know what happens. Heh.

it could have been better, i think, but it wasn't disappointing. i suppose having watched all 23 episodes you watch it escalate and expect something really mindblowing at the end. i agree peter didn't need nathan to fly him up, and what was so wrong with clare shooting peter given he can regenerate anyway?! i was impressed with niki's progress though. and there's something just so weird about peter's lower lip!

i don't know but i think the bad person Is peter.... because if u remember he can have all the powers so maybe thats why she says he can see her!

i agree with most that the finale was a bummer... peter and sylar should have fought a better battle... claire bear jumping out the window was totally surprising yet hilarious... and nicky to me, redeemed herself after clubbing sylar. she was a hero after all. even though the finale didn't wow me much, the whole season was actually really good and i can't wait for next season! i just hope that peter survives because he's hot and that would be a waste to cut him out!

I loved the finale. I think it was just right. You need to have a reason to see the next season. As far as how it went down. Peter had not yet mastered being able to use more than one ability at once. He could only do one thing at a time, not to mention he was doing everything he could not to explode in that moment. His brother needed to come in and help. That's what Mom didn't expect, she thought Nathan would just do as he was told. Peter was the wildcard because he thought on his own. I LOVED Claire jumping out the window. I think there was a theme here of people doing their own thing, instead of what they were told they needed to do. As far as the "Origin" powers, we didn't learn anyone's powers except for Linderman. I'm sure that was intentional, although I really did want to know Grandma Petrelli's power. Honestly, the only thing I was disappointed in was the last three minutes. I had seen on the Today show, that the last three minutes of this season, were the first three of the next. It was disappointing.

I thought that Nathan flew him off to save him. If she shot him in the back of the head, he would be dead and not able to regenerate (like when he had glass in his head there, and couldn't regenerate until Claire removed it). If Nathan flew him off into space for him to explode, then there is a chance that he could regenerate and still live (like in the future when he had the funky scar and was with Nicky, after he had exploded and still lived). I think it was supposed to show that Nathan was good after all, and to redeem his character. I thought it was awesome too when Nicky whacked Sylar with the parking meter ;) I loved it.

The end really got me, I guess I was expecting Sylar to die in a more dramatic way and the whole Hiro transporting back in time just confused me. All in all it was a great first season and I can't wait to see what goes down when fall rolls around.

i didn't understand why claire didn't shoot peter. shooting him would mean only one person would die...but since nathan flew away with him, that means two people died. that just wasn't logical to me. i am glad, however, to see that hiro is going to be in the show next season. did anyone else think that one of the guys on horseback looked like hiro's dad??

Does anyone else see the Bible connections with all the biblical names? I wonder what that is all about. And Linderman's hotel is "The Corinthian". . . Interesting.

Watch with Kristin (from E!) says Peter, Nathan and Sylar are back next season!

Sylar did change into a cockroach, and transport himself to the past two weeks, and if you see Chapter One, Mohinder kills him in the apartment of his father. The other theory it is that the person who is worse than Sylar, save Sylar of his fate, to have his sith apprentice.

I love Heroes, and I wasn't disappointed that there wasn't a huge cliffhanger, but the episode seemed to move more slowly than ever before. I even found myself almost bored a couple of times, which has NEVER happened during an episode of Heroes. All in all, though, it was a decent episode. I think Peter couldn't fly himself b/c he still hasn't mastered his powers, and probably can only manage one at a time. Plus, Nathan had to be a hero (no pun intended) and show that he does have a heart and save the millions of people from dying, even though it meant he finally had to stand up to Mama.

Yeah, if he DIDN'T change into the cockroach, then why did they even show the bug? They definitely wanted you to think that.

Heroes season finale in my opinion wasnt even supposed to be that climactic. thaey cant leave anything major because the major thing that was supposed to ahppen is the bomb and because its supposed ot be "comic book-esque" then they need to have it finish off. i loved that they finally had Mohnider narrat again because serioiusly none of liked the whole Linderman naration, it was all too boring. The person Molly can't find is going to be something i look wayyy forward too! Milo is amaziong! I think that Clair couldnt shoot Peter just cause she wanted there to be another way and Nathan coming in was a ctually a good thing because it showed how they united. I don't think Peter has mastered using all his skills yet, jsuch as using flying and blowing up at the same time. He needed his brothers help because after he blows up, he still needs to regenerate himself. I think were gonnalearn Gradma Petrelli's power in Heores:Origins and its definetley gonna guide us into season 2! and can we talk about the whole "volume 2" Hiro goes and sees the battle and notices his hero? what was that all about? and i think Sylar is in fact in the sewer trying to find a way to help himself into getting better cause Sylar is a maniac, he could not have died that easily. and im soooooo mad at the Nikky hitting him, that was so loser. overall i think Heroes was amazing last night and i cannot wait till next season! i just hope Milo is there!

Ok question. How could sylar change form. he didn't kill the girl. That girl (the one from Stick it) was knocked out upstairs. And I know if the future he's a shape shifter so i'm assuming he does kill her. But he didn't in this episode. As for the blood train to the sewer cover it was still man sized so he didnt' change. I didnt' see the graphic novel (which i have to get now) but the show itself.

I thought the final was good, not great, but good. I thought the same thing about shooting Peter, that would have just killed one Petrelli, but instead Nathan thought it was a better idea to fly off and kill them both? However, I don't think any of the three are dead. I think our beloved Nathan, Peter and Sylar will all return...how I'm not quite sure. I'm also very interested in this new villan that Molly spoke about. Can't wait for next season.

yeah i didn´t like it either... or maybe i had to high standards i don´t know...i thought someone was going to die or something... or i expected a bigger fight between Sylar and Peter, when Nikki help him i thought this is it everyone is going to fight Sylar but Nothing oh well

i liked the finale okay but it was a bit anticlimatic, i had the same issue with peter and the flying thing but hasnt he always had issues with flying? remember when the invisible man pushed him out the window and he just let himself fall? i am excited to watch next season and i think they did a good job setting that up but i still feel kinda cheated on the finale.

also, another theory of my brother, seeing the graphic novels, it's that Nathan and Peter didn't explode, the satellite that Mr. Bennet sent to Hana to destroy explote. Can't wait til September!!!!
pinupsweetheart pinupsweetheart 9 years
I agree with you on the fact that Peter can fly himself and could have done it himself - but I think the fact he was starting to explode prevented him from tapping into his other abilities. I think it was a brotherly thing to do for the senator to take him up into space. I personally like Peter and I hope that that was not the end of the two of them. It left a lot of questions unanswered from past shows. I don’t think it will be the end of them. I liked the fact we learned Mr. Bennett’s name at the end. It shows he was just a man that wanted to protect his daughter. In the beginning, he was portrayed as the bad guy – now he just a humble man. I think there is a reason we didn’t learn more about the other people around us. We didn’t learn the reason why Molly gave Mohinder the gold star. We didn’t learn the grandma’s abilities; we didn’t learn why Molly is so protective over Parkman. Maybe there is something we don’t know that happened when he rescued her from Sylar. We also never saw them take away Sylar’s body. I don’t think any of these details were overlooked. I think the writers gave us some closure for all the dedication all year long. You have to remember it reads like a comic book. Every story has some form of closure before the new series starts. I have to say it is the best written show on network tv. We will just have to wait and see what they have in store for us this fall.
