Love her or loathe her, Paula Abdul is a fascinating creature. Who didn't love watching her get upstaged by a rapping cat in the 1989 video for "Opposites Attract"? And who didn't watch at least one of those videos of her being fairly incoherent on national TV?
Bravo is banking on our curiosity about the most wacko "American Idol" judge tonight, when "Hey Paula" premieres with two back-to-back half-hour episodes. The show follows essentially the same voyeuristic formula the network has used in the past to give glimpses into other various semi-washed-up stars' lives (think: "Being Bobby Brown"). The first episode shows Paula complaining that her wardrobe assistants didn't get her the right outfit for a cross-country plane flight and berating QVC staffers for failing to execute the proper designs for her jewelry line; the second includes a somewhat bewildered Tim Gunn presenting Paula with an award.
I'm guessing that your tolerance for "Hey Paula" will have a lot to do with how you feel about Paula herself. Do you think she's an amusing train wreck who has good intentions hiding somewhere deep inside of her? Or do you think she's just grating and annoying? The second category of folks should probably stay far away from "Hey Paula," but the first category just might want to check it out. To see two preview clips for tonight's episodes,
