Hot Track: Bright Eyes, "Endless Entertainment"

One of my most-anticipated albums of 2007 is Cassadaga, from Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes. To whet our appetites, he's offering one of the songs as a free download on his web site, but until today, I couldn't listen to the WMV file, so thanks to You Ain't No Picasso for posting it.

Oberst is one of those polarizing musicians that people tend to love or hate. Despite his affected voice and tendency for melodrama, I can't resist the guy's songwriting, and he won some more fans with I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, one of the two albums he released in 2005. On the new track, "Endless Entertainment," he seems to be taking the lessons of that album but going in a more lush, brass-heavy direction. Sounds promising.

Hmm, I'm not sure I like it. Brass should be right there in your face, but this sounds like a big pile of mush. I had to listen to it twice just to pick out the horn line. The guitar riffs are pretty hokey, too. I think Sufjan Steven's "The Tallest Man, The Broadest Shoulders" had the best 'indie' horn arrangement. Then again, being a trumpet player, I might be biased.

I used to HATE Bright Eyes, but I really liked "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning." After hearing that album, I was able to go back and enjoy some of his other stuff.
