Sleeping Beauty was the first Disney film I ever saw. I think I grew up okay.

Being raised in the 80's means I was exposed to a whole host of Disney films and Sleeping Beauty was one of my absolute favorites (along with The Sword in the Stone and Beauty and the Beast). I don't think they had an adverse affect on me at all, but I do see where Popwatch is coming from. I think they raise a valid concern about our society's emphasis on youth and beauty and setting a positive example to children (which is really the parents' responsibility).

I loved Heather O'Rourke in the Poltergeist movies. That commercial didn't make me cringe, although it probably disgusted her family.

People make a big deal about everything...they are complaining because Sleeping Beauty (Aurora) got engaged/married at the age of 16 and because the fairies bestowed beauty as their first gift to baby Aurora. :oy: I grew up on Disney movies and I knew that in most cases, getting married at 16 = not good in 99.9% of cases. Oh well, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie and I think that teaches the best lesson. I saw that Poltergeist DirectTV commercial and I was really excited when I saw it at first, but now I think it's in poor taste unless they got permission from Heather O'Rourke's family to use her image.

How do you handle fairy tales with young girls? You let them watch and delight in them just like you did when you were a little girl, and stop trying to over-analyze and read your own viewpoint into everything, because there will be plenty of time for that when they're older.
