Lost Recap Episode 5 "The Constant"

Lost Episode 5: "The Constant"

Wow. This is one of them freaky mess-with-your-head Lost episodes, and I think it's one of the most riveting episodes I've ever seen. They're again playing with the space-time stuff, nearly to the point of causing vertigo. And I like it.

Anyone else cry a little at the end? Um, maybe more than a little? Please — tell me I'm not a total sap.

Also, we got an Iron Man trailer! That was awesome.

For a detailed recap of the happenings in this week's Lost, check out SweetPeasMom's post. For my thoughts and to share your own — spoilers ahead! —

.

  • Oooh, Juliet is all sarcastic with the archaeologist lady. "Maybe if you speak real slow, we'll understand what you're saying." Sassy.
  • I am loving this Desmond-and-Sayid duo. I'd like Desmond to see more of that in my future.
  • They do really well to disorient us along with Desmond. These quick cuts between Desmond's experiences — apparently called flashtimes, rather than flashbacks or flash-forwards — are totally dizzying.
  • The guy in the bed, Minkowski, is so creepy. "It's happening to you, too, isn't it?!" "I was just on a Ferris wheel." Gah! This episode struck me as being similar to older spooky shows, like The Twilight Zone. It's not just mysterious at this point — it's really scary.
  • However, sometimes this time travel stuff squishes my brains.
  • I'm starting to like the eccentric Daniel Faraday. His 1996 self had a pretty hairdo. And now we know that his faltering memory might be due due to prolonged exposure to radiation.
  • Minkowski says they regularly got calls from Penny that they were under strict orders not to take. Why?
  • So, Mr. Widmore had the highest bid on the log from the ship on the island, the Black Rock (which, among other things stored dynamite, and was also the place where all the Sawyer-Locke-Locke's dad stuff went down). The ship's log was kept secret by, apparently, the Hanso family, and now (er, in 1996 anyway) it's in Mr. Widmore's possession.
  • Desmond and Mr. Widmore in the bathroom together is kind of funny, but that dude is harsh: "It's not me who hates you." Ouch.
  • There are a lot of cool theories and questions posited on Lostpedia regarding this episode, with my favorite being all the connections drawn between the episode and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five.
  • Sayid is so totally desensitized: When that Minkowski guy drops Sayid barely raises an eyebrow.
  • Aww . . . Penny is Desmond's constant! "I love you, Penny. I've always loved you."Aaaaand crying. Turning to sobs. Okay, end the episode already!
  • I sort of wish they'd had this "constant" term back around Valentine's Day when I was sending around those Lost-themed e-cards. "You're my constant!"
  • Dan's notebook: "If anything happens, Desmond Hume will be my constant." Love it.

What did you think of this week's Lost? Who would be your constant?

I just saw this article with the Lost creators answering some questions posed by the cast. There is little new in it, but it does help set some things up for us: http://www.tvguide.com/news/lost-questions-answered/080304-01

Just a heads up...ABC actually has online streams of every Lost episode...Seasons 1-current 4!!! How cool is that!!!

ooh, I remember the call to Penny--it was 2 Portuguese guys bundled up somewhere cold, and one of them bore a striking and (controversial) resemblance to Jack. Must re-watch!

Cried my eyes out! I was so happy to have the Des - Penny story line back ...it's a nice break from the Jack-Kate-Sawyer triangle that never really seems to go anywhere and lacks any feeling (seems they aren't that in love). The "conscious time travel" is brilliant!

Renee3, I'll have to recheck, but I am certain someone did call Penny and I am pretty sure that Daniel Faraday guy was the one who saw the blip, which is what makes me think that is how they found the island in the first place...

I want Josh Holloway to my constant.. can someone get him on the phone for me, stat.. thanks!

microchip, are you sure it was daniel that made the call to Penny? I haven't rewatched it yet (that episode was Live together, die alone I believe) but I don't remember ever seeing who actually called Penny. Or was he one of those 2 guys on the boat, I thought they were portugese or something?

OK, first of all. I loved this episode.. yes it made me cry a little, yes, getting to the ship is interesting, but lets go back further. Des did not always time travel. This only happened after he went in and turned the key on the big ass magnet (aka Locke's hatch). Also, when the magnet did go bang, it also registered with Daniel Faraday (who made the call to Penny)... (this was the season finally some years ago...) Interestingly enough about Lost is that they always have some soap opera crap going on (the blonde girl with Sayid, Kate/Sawyer, Charlie/what's her name, etc etc) What makes Des/Penny good is that it is so much more well thought out. I wonder if their are different writers for each aspect of the show: 1) Island politics, Locke/Ben. 2) Relationships 3) Space-time etc etc What do you think Sugar? Thanks

Best episode of the season so far... my head was spinning by the end trying to sort out the Desmond/Daniel constant thing. Loved it!

Jess, from what I remember with that episode. I thought she was more impressed with the dharma collar that was on the skeleton. I got the sense she knew what was going on before she got there? I'd need to watch that again though.

I would just like to say that the writers of LOST have no idea what cultural anthropologists (Clarie) know. Ive been bothered by this since they first introduced her and she was able to recognize the skeleton in the desert as a polar bear. Unless they are not letting us know that she is a zooarchaeologist or a physical anthropologist there would be no way for her to know specifically that it was a polar bear because bones are not her area of study UNLESS she has spotted polar bears in weird areas before but still she would not have the knowledge to identify types of skeletons because that is not what a cultural anthropologist does BTW loved this episode

jmast, The man in the window was Mr. Hanso. The Asian man doing the seminar was Dr. Candle/Wickmund (according to lostpedia). I'm sure the Widmore and Hanso families are connected in some way!!!

Wow, such great comments! Hotstuff, I'm with you, I was yelling at Penny like she would hear me "Hurry up!!! Hurry up!!!!!!!!!!!" And yes, I teared up in the end. Awww. Ok, this might have been mentioned already but I believe it was in Season 2 when Desmond told Locke to watch the Orientation tape. Didn't Mr. Hanso mention a wealthy businessman and they panned to a man with white hair standing in an office building from far away? Since I saw that episode and then saw Penny's father I swore it was him! Does anyone else remember that? Sorry if it was brought up already. I'm really out of the loop here. LOL!

"A friend and I were talking and we think that the reason that the Oceanic 6 were able to make it off of the island is because they are each other's constant...what do you guys think?" I was thinking the same thing at first and trying to make connections with how they could have known each other before the crash but it just doesn't add up. I think you only need a constant if you've been exposed to radiation like Des and Daniel...which makes their new relationship even more sweet, awww. Oh and can we give a shout out to the numbers being back! 2.342 YAY!

I definetely cried :) such a sweet moment, awww!!! I always liked Dan, he seems kind of weird but I always thought there was a lot of important stuff going through his mind at once and that's why he had to write it down, because it was overwhelming, but the whole memory thing makes sense. I can't wait for the next Des-centered episode. Did they only skip some days in October or in November and December too ?? I think the last 4/5 days of every month ? not sure ! and that whole 'leaving the sink running' thing is confusing, how could he be related to everything ?? ahhh so exciting :D !!

If you still have LOST on TIVO, it's also at the very end of the show!

http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index?pn=index You can see it on this page, just scroll down some, it's on the right, and look at the reflection in the water. They also show it at the end of the show every week.

"As for Desmond being Dan's constant that makes sense, but what exactly are we supposed to think about it? Did that comment only show up in Dan's journal after Desmond visited him?" No, I think the constant has been in his journal since 1996 but since his brain is not all there, because of the radiation, he just never remembered Desmond or what that meant in his journal. So now he can flip through his journal and find meaning to some things he wrote. "As for Mr. Widmore leaving the water on, my first thought was that it was a sign of disrespect (as if Des was the bathroom attendant).." chatoyante, So true I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. One of the meanest lines I ever heard on tv was back when Penny's dad told Des that one drop of his scotch was worth more than him. I was FURIOUS!

Man, I'm a little bummed that work caused me to miss this little Lost convo today :( I seriously loved last night's episode. I love Desmond, I love Desmond and Penny, I love anything they can give us on the time stuff, and I've loved Daniel since his first episode. I definitely need to do some reading up and watch that episode again last night. It also really made me feel like I need to see all the Desmond eps again because I'm sure I'm forgetting lots of stuff in the whole Penny saga. Geek- do you have a pic of the Lost logo with the skyline? I just Google image searched and found nothing. I definitely haven't caught that yet!

ONE OF THE BEST EPISODE EVER ! Penny's father definitively has something to do in that hole island story. WOW that space/time subject will bring me crazy ! I was wondering too about the calendar ... I am sure next episode will be explosive!! This was the 5th! Matthew Fox said that in the 8th episode (and the last filmed until now :( ) we will see them getting off the island (if I remember well). I guess they will give us LOT of informations in the next 3 episodes .... PENNY AND DESMOND THEY MUST BE TOGETHER!

Yeah, we've noticed the city reflection all season so far...my thought on that is that it's supposed to evoke the fact that time is passing in "civilization" all the while, but that our frame of reference is the island, not the city. Sort of an undercurrent of awareness that there's still an outside world but it's not accessible at this time. As for Mr. Widmore leaving the water on, my first thought was that it was a sign of disrespect (as if Des was the bathroom attendant), since he seems to love reminding Des that he's from a higher social class. I still think it might be a coincidence that it roused him after the jump.
