Lost Recap Episode 8: "Meet Kevin Johnson"

Lost Episode 8: "Meet Kevin Johnson"

This is it, folks! The last new episode of Lost until April 24. It gave us plenty to chew on and yet more crazy-making timeline twists. But is it enough to hold us over until Lost returns?

Can you tell how much I'm loving that we've gotten so much Desmond time this season (see image)? He didn't even have that many lines this week, but I just had to use this picture. Sigh.

Darn near everything there is to say is a spoiler, so to discuss this week's last episode for a while,

.

  • This whole time when everyone's wondered where Michael went to and what he was doing, he was back in the U.S.! He was just living his life, Walt was fine and everything. Crazy.
  • So, Ben gets Michael off the island and back to New York, so Michael is not part of the Oceanic Six. Once I learned that, I had this hope that Sayid would be in the same situation (not in the Oceanic Six) and we'd still have another member of the Six to figure out. No such luck. And according to the final preview thingy at the end there, they said that we now know all the members of the Oceanic Six — and they flashed an image of Aaron. I guess he does count.
  • What's super cool about this episode is that it sets up the possibility for a number of people to get off the island, courtesy of Ben, as long as they work for him. This — and the flash-forward device they've started using — provides more options when creating storylines, rather than just being stuck on the island and seeing peoples' flashbacks. I like it.
  • For whatever reason, I totally thought Claire would be the one to die this week. I never suspected Rousseau, but then again, I often forget about her entirely. It's a shame she died, I really liked her.
  • Poor, tortured Michael. I feel for the guy, he's so miserable and haunted and he can't do anything about it.
  • That Miles has some sassy lines this week! He's fast becoming another character I love to hate.
  • There is something so fishy about the whole thing with Ben sending Rousseau, Alex and Karl into the forest. He gives Rousseau such a meaningful stare when he says, "Your mother will protect you," and he'd been glaring at Karl just before he gave them the map. I almost think that he arranged this somehow in order to get rid of Karl because Alex is "his." In the jungle when Rousseau is telling Alex to take her hand and that she loves her, her eyes are full of tears, like she knows what's coming. The whole thing is sad and eerie.
  • It's heartbreaking to see Michael pawn the watch Jin eventually gave him in order to buy a gun. A gun that doesn't even succeed in killing him.
  • So, Tom's gay. And he can just "come and go" between the island and the mainland as he pleases. This newfound info makes me want to go back and watch all of Tom's scenes again.
  • I'm glad they explained where they came up with all those bodies for the fake Flight 815 wreckage, but Tom talking about all that — the cemetery in Thailand, etc. — made me queasy. It's so morbid.
  • That bomb trick is cruel. "Not yet." I would have laughed if I weren't so exasperated.
  • "There are people on your boat who are innocent. . . I will not kill innocent people." Really, Ben? Because I'm pretty sure you will.
  • Again with the "good guys" label: "Then consider yourself one of the good guys."
  • Sayid tells the captain that "Kevin Johnson" is not who he says he is. I kind of expected the captain to just be like, "Yeah, I know."

What did you think about this episode? Do we have enough to discuss until April 24?

I think the pilot believes that Mr. Widmore is the one that planted the fake Oceanic 815, as he was supposed to be the pilot for the flight and he was friends of the doomed 815 pilot!

i'm a bit confused: isn't there some contradiction going on about the planted oceanic 815? tom told michael that widmore planted it and the people on the freighter believe ben planted it, right? but the way the captain phrased it was confusing - like widmore had all the resources to procure the black box from the plane and "he" had the resources to put all that there since there are obviously survivors of the crash - was "he" ben or widmore?!

Here's a really interesting theory on the whole time travel bit. It sounds pretty far fetched, but I like the idea. http://www.timelooptheory.com/the_timeline.htm

There were two ear things with Alex: First, she has a rather large ring in a piercing far up on her right ear. Second, she had some sort of ear bud in her left ear. I didn't notice it at the time, and chalked it up to the possibility that the actress that plays her has hearing problems and a hearing aid.

thanks! yes I do remember when Tom told KAte that she wasn't 'his type', but I totally missed his kiss with Aruto, I'm gonna go rewatch in case I missed something else, including those earpieces you're talking about :) As lkandy, I was wondering about Karl's origin, where does he come from ???

PRSugar...about the "don't tell anyone" comment between Karl and Alex: If I recall correctly that came right after an exchange where Alex said that Ben cared about her and wanted her safe, and Karl said that he did too, and then someone said it was one thing that Ben and Karl had in common. I think the implication there was, somewhat jokingly, that Karl didn't want to tell anyone he had something in common with Ben. That said, Alex's body language and her unusually accented belly do seem suspicious. It wouldn't surprise me if she were preggers too...oh, what a tangled web. And Rousseau can't be dead! She's way too tough for that...right?

Absolutely can't wait til the 24th... I find it the whole Widmore plotline a bit too straightforward. Why wouldn't he cover his tracks better...I mean, he bought everything under the company's name? And everyone on the freighter knows he was the one who sent it, and don't seem to mind telling everyone else. This leads me to believe maybe it really is Ben who planted the plane with the dead bodies, and that there some greater force behind this whole freighter thing? Maybe it turns out it's Michael's body in the coffin which Jack visits...the obit read that the deceased was in NY and survived by a son. Also, to Leilanic, I'm pretty sure it wasn't Walt's grandmother in an earlier episode nor was it a picture of Walt, could be wrong though. Can't wait until the 24th!

My thoughts about the show: I really liked this episode. I'm glad Michael is back, he's one of the origional crew. He also deserved his own epi considering he wasn't on last season. I am sick of them using poor Michael as some type of scape goat, geez they want somebody killed call Michael, why not the Iraqi torturer? What is most interesting, but LOST makes my head hurt too much to figure it out, is the revelation that Michael and Walt have been home all this time and hiding who they are for two months, I just can't put my brain through figuring out the time in NY vs. the island. I guess I never considered how they would explain being the only ones to make it back to America! Also seems like Walt is also tortured and the relationship very strained with his dad. I wonder if we are going to see Walt do more of his special abilities seeing as he was able to have Locke see him on the island all the way from NY. His abilities has always been something I hoped the writers would explain a bit more. It was sad to see Michael give up Jin's watch they hated each other at first but then became like best friends. I love how neither understood what the other was saying but knew exactly what each other meant, their relationship was cute. I totally remember Mr. Friendly telling Kate she wasn't his type so I always figured he was gay but it was still funny hearing him say how he liked to indulge! I feel so bad for Rousseau, I noticed that for once she finally had a nice outfit on and wasn't dressed like Rambo then they went and killed her. Seems like the island has once again taken someone after they found their purpose and peace...her daughter. I'm glad we finally got a touching scene btwn mother and daughter she's been looking for her for 16yrs for goodness sakes. I noticed the earpiece also...don't know what that was about! DAMN, what the hell happens to everybody else if those are the only six to make it!?

I noticed an ear piece, too! What was that about? I thought maybe I'd mistaken something that was an earring or something. I only caught sight of it on Alex, but I haven't watched the episode since last night. I'm really glad others caught that as well. I honestly thought I was seeing things.

So sad that it's not going to be on for over a month.

I noticed that thing dangling from her ear, too! I hope we get to find out what that's all about.

What was that EAR PIECE??? THANK GOD I'M NOT A CRAZY PERSON.

I swear it looked like Alex was wearing some kind of earpiece/microphone on her right ear, & Karl had a flesh colored in-ear thing too. Am I seeing things, or did anyone else notice this?

It would be great if Rousseau wasn't dead. I've been hoping for a Rousseau flashback since season 1.

halfbakedjake- While I agree that the Des/Penny episode was A-MAZING and would have been a better way to end things before a hiatus, bear in mind that this is a forced hiatus. This episode was never meant to be anything but number 8 of 16 this season and now because of the writer's strike is getting more scrutiny that if it had aired as planned. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Man the little murder spree at the end there seemed like a weak attempt for the writers to go "aHA! a brilliant surprise to keep everyone in suspense til april!" cuz yeah, although it was surprising, and may (if we're very, very lucky) be an important turning point in the plot later on (saaaay if dead mom starts haunting ben via creepy island powers and makes him kill himself), i found it overall a somewhat disappointing and even boring end prior to the hiatus. i mean, i know the writers said this season was going to be "darker and bloodier", but its better when its a little more poignant to make us actually care what happens. for example, i would've thought the episode where desmond phoned penny would have been a much better way to end the first batch of episodes this season (since it is kind of the Best Episode Of Anything Ever), instead of killing off two minor characters. I dunno, just my opinion.

Yeah I have a feeling that Alex is pregnant and Danielle is (hopefully) not dead. I also was worried that Claire was gonna die because of all of the internet rumors and they gave her a little screentime tonight. It also seemed like everyone was mentioning Claire and the baby a little more than usual.

My boyfriend caught the possible Alex pregnancy thing as well. That would open a very interesting can of worms... and would make total sense considering that pregnancy is a major theme.

I think the producers said that ONE person was going to die in last night's episode, so my money is on Rousseau still being alive!

@ Greentea, in season 2, when Kate was changing into the dress Ben made her put on, Tom told her she wasnt his type...I remembered that last night when I saw him kiss Arturo... Also, Im wondering where Karl came from. I think he said in season 3 that he was born on the island??? (not sure about that)...but, if so, who r his parents???

great episode, it was sad how alex's mom died. People should know better than to trust Ben. Ben is at place where he wants to be. I feel everything is in his plans. He prob. has like 20 back up plans for everything that happens.

So I rewatched some of it and I thought of something. Could the shooter (at alex's group) possibly be Keamy? At first I wasn't sure if was Freight people, but then I saw again that they showed that whole part where Keamy and his friends are just shooting off the ship. Seems like maybe they're telling us something?

I too don't think Rousseau is dead, if only because at Comic-con Cuse and Lindelof promised a flashback episode with her to come either this season or next ;) I think Karl is definitely a goner which is a shame because I always wanted to know more about that Clockwork Orange-like scene from last season and what, if any, effect it had on him. The Michael stuff was interesting, but it left me, as most Lost episodes succeed in doing, wanting to know more! Mostly I'd love to see how he got from the island to NY, rather than from NY to the freighter. I think tess2530 is spot on with the order of the flash forwards: Sun, Hurley, Kate, Jack...with Sayid being a bit of a wild card as to where his flash forward fits in.

I caught how affectionate Karl and Alex were, but didn't give it a second thought. Now, I remember how pissed Ben looked and read up the theories on LostPedia. Alex has almost GOT to be pregnant. Even if Tom was portrayed at some point as being married, that means nothing really. I know many couples who are married and one or the other realized they were gay later. Also, this is LOST...pretty much anything can be a cover for anything. So he could be straight and playing Arturo, he could be gay and Arturo could be playing Tom for some gain - perhaps hired by Widmore? It could really be anything.
