Lost recap, Fourth Season Episode 1, The Beginning of the End

Lost Episode 1: "The Beginning of the End"

I'm not going to go so far as to say the Season Four premiere of Lost was worth the wait because that was a really long wait, and I don't want to jinx us somehow, but this first episode of the new season definitely delivered all the Lost-y goodness we've been craving for months on end. I don't want to spoil too much for those who haven't seen the episode, so to read my thoughts and add your own,

If you need an awesomely detailed full rundown of the show, check out WhiplashGirlchild's recap and of course our TeamSugar Lost Group.

  • Is there a better way to kick off the fourth season of Lost than with a crazy high-speed car chase complete with zooming over fences and crashing into fruit stands? I think not.
  • Again we get some flash-forwards — this time concentrating on Hurley's experience post-rescue — and they're crazy. Literally. However, the show begins not with Hurley's flash-forward, but with Jack's as he watches the car chase on TV. Also, this flash-forward Jack is way more with it than the last flash-forward Jack was, and he mentions "thinking about growing a beard." So, these scenes are from before the bearded, alcoholic Jack days. Perhaps it's Hurley's funeral Jack attends later?
  • Now we know that it wasn't just Kate and Jack who were rescued: there's Hurley and probably the three others who make up "The Oceanic Six."
  • That guy Hurley meets in the mental institution, Matthew Abbadon is a creepy fellow. As is always the case with Lost, a name is not just a name. According to Lostpedia, "In Hebrew, Abaddon means 'destruction.' In Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11 it means 'place of destruction,' or 'realm of the dead.' Many biblical scholars believe Abaddon to be Satan or the antichrist."
  • Awww . . . Sawyer shows his little softie side again, asking Hurley if he wants to talk about Charlie. "Holler if you need me." Heh . . . I'll holler for ya, Sawyer . . . heh.
  • The ladies gossip corner with Claire, Rose and Sun is pretty cute; Sun and Claire joshing each other about hospital birth versus island birth, Rose making reference to Claire rewarding Charlie with sex. Bawdy!
  • The image of the eye is one of the many common motifs in this show. Still, I jumped a mile when that eye popped up in the window as Hurley looked into Jacob's hut. Whose eye is that? And how does the building disappear when Hurley wills it away?
  • Holy cow, Jack was actually going to shoot Locke in the face! Locke's hurt little expression afterward was oddly comical, though. Maybe that makes me a bad person.
  • At the mental institution, Hurley paints pictures of an igloo and a bundled up person next to it. Is this just Hurley veering as far away from his tropical island memories as possible — or something more?
  • I'm curious as to why Naomi covered for the Losties on the phone with George. But I can't say I care that much.
  • Aw, watching Hurley's big ol' face crumple just breaks my heart. "I'm listening to Charlie. I'm listening to my friend."
  • And yet again there is a division into two groups. This time it's the Jack vs. Locke round, however, with repercussions extending beyond even the rescue from the island, as Hurley later apologizes to Jack for having chosen Locke's camp.

Just watched the new episode. It was great after so long, but still a lot of things yet to be answered. Great comments, didn't notice christian inside the house either... One thing I thought about, was when the detective asked about ana lusia, he asked about seeing her on the plane or beforehand, not after the plane crashed. As if the oceanic six were the only survivers from the planecrash - maybe that is what the lie is about, saying that everyone else is dead. But I guess we'll see....

WOW WOW WOW WOW ! SUCH AN AMAZING EPISODE! it gives us so much information yet SOOOO much questions I LOVE IT! Lost is definitively one of the best tv show of all time! DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN thanks ofr the foto of Jack's dad ... that's creepy !! And the igloo Hurley was drawing, it HAS to be a reference to the ones employed by Penelope to search for Desmond... And YES I also listened hurley saying IT so weird .... also What did Jack feared Hurley would reveal? Damn it all those questions!!!!! THE OCEAN 6!!! do you think Desmond is part of them I mean ... I would be tragic if Penelope had done all of this and he's dead because of some reason ... CAN't wait for the next episode!!

Man that was exciting! Hurley is special! That's so creepy! Charlie came back (is he going to keep on coming back?!) Very very very sad though. Oh and I love Locke...I CAN'T BELIEVE JAck would've shot him!!! Why would Hurley regret siding with him?! It's obvious these people coming to the island are not there for them...Who are the last three of the Oceanic 6? So many questions, so little time.

OHHH and hurley telling jack - never say never!!! i have a feeling that's how the series will end.. the tormented 6 will end up back at the island! if not all 6, then Jack and if he's alive, hurley!

The greatest season premiere EVER!!!!!!Cant wait for next week. The Christian part was so cool to find out on Lostpedia...the last mobisode/missing pieces featured Christian telling Vincent to wake up Jack...hmmmmm.

tiabia "PS: With our great discussion based on one episode, I really wonder how people can say this show is awful...sure every episode isn't 100% perfect, but seriously...all the theories that can be sprouted from this show...I'm surpised UCLA hasn't developed a class based solely on this show, LOL." Did you see the recap post of Lost on TMZ? It has like 300 posts. I'm like when the hell did TMZ start reviewing shows? It's just THAT good!

So not only will other shows be copying Lost flashbacks they'll start copying flash forwards now also!

This is by far my favorite show. I thought the flash forwards where a great new twist to the show. Good Job writers!!!!!

re: HedderP I took the whole thing about Jack rambling about his father in the season 3 finale as another sign of his deteriorating state. Also a way for the writers to throw us off about the flashforward thing. But...they've been hinting very heavily at Christian being more involved than originally thought. The last Missing Piece webisode that aired involved him telling Vincent to wake Jack up b/c there was a lot of work to do and it segued straight into the start of the show, when Jack wakes up on the island. Gives me the creeps! Anyway, really loved the premiere. Instantly hooked me again!

I just re watched last seasons finale and I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed what I did. In the apparent flash forward when Jack is caught drunk and high on stolen pills by the new chief of surgery he says "Get my father down here and if I'm drunker than he is you can fire me". Jack's father was supposedly dead before he even ended up on the island yet in this apparent future episode he is asking for his father. What's going on there? Was this their way of telling us his father is still alive, possibly one of the "Oceanic 6"?

I don't think Naomi did cover for Locke. I think "tell my sister I love her" is code for "help me...danger, danger, danger." I think these people are Dharma coming to reclaim their island. But I agree with others that something really bad happens. OH, it's so exciting!!!

I just did the whole series over the last three and a half weeks -- it's going to be so hard waiting a week between new ones now! Since last night I've been thinking about who the Oceanic 6 could be.

Really jenintx...I'm going to have re-watch that!!! i also saw on a lost blog (losteastereggs) that when jack and hurley are playing basketball, it appears as though someone is eavesdropping on their conversation from a window in the gym. it's the one right above the basketball hoop. there is a tiny little blip in the middle window for a split second; you can really barely notice anything except when the scenes were pulled by the second.

the show is the BEST show on tv- period.

I don't think Nadia's dead, she's shown up in other character's flashbacks. Locke inspected her house when he was a house inspector in one episode. Charlie also saved her when she was getting mugged in London. Though I guess it's possible that she died sometime after both of those events, but I think Sayid just thinks she died during her escape from prison. Also, from what I hear, the "Oceanic 6" are Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Jin and Sayid.
tiabia tiabia 8 years
sumbum, I think Sayid thinks that Nadia is dead because the US Government threatened her life with his choice of helping to spy on the Iraqi bombers. I don't think she is actually dead...I thought she was his reason for going to Los Angeles. ARGH, my mind is so muddled...LOST got me again, LOL, darns it, now I've got to re-watch Seasons 2-3...LOL.

tiabia — It totally is one of those shows. I was dying to know what all the whispering was about as Hurley approached the cabin, too. But figuring that one out was a "lost" cause. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Sorry, everyone. hotstuff — Awesome! I'm not totally crazy.
